John Tinney McCutcheon (May 6, 1870 – June 10, 1949).
An American editorial cartoonist and illustrator often called “The Dean of Cartoonists”. Famed for his work in the early 20th century while working for the Chicago newspapers.
McCutcheon’s cartoons covered political events, local, national and international news, and the daily lives of Americans. His Pulitzer Prize in 1932 was for his Depression Era cartoon “A Wise Economist Asks a Question.” (see mirror links above). McCutcheon worked for the Chicago Tribune until his retirement in 1946. During his career, he published volumes of his cartoons as well as several books. He also illustrated stories for George Ade and his brother George Barr McCutcheon.
McCutcheon was a world traveler illustrating several of his trips as books. He also visited the Western Front during the First World War where he did artwork as well. He even owned a private island in the Bahamas, Salt Cay, that he bought in 1916. He must have been paid very well for his work!
Among his best known works are "Injun Summer," first published on Sept. 29, 1907, is considered one of the best in his "boy" series of cartoons. It was reprinted annually until it fell out of favour in the early 1990s! (See Chicago Tribune Link above)

An animal lover, McCutcheon served as the first president of the Chicago Zoological Society from 1921 until 1948.
McCutcheon married Evelyn Shaw on 20 January 1917. The couple had 4 children.
