Synopsis: Christina is dumped by her wealthy fiancé Roy and becomes engaged to her long-time friend Matt. Roy returns and Christina resumes her romance with him but procrastinates telling Matt. Roy arranges to have Matt discover them together and Matt leaves town. Christina, learning of Roy’s treachery, apologises to Matt and their wedding is back on.

Synopsis: Hildy is so beautiful that she attracts attention wherever she goes, and many men date her for this reason. Tom says “she’s just a show-piece” and they break up. Hildy decides to “become a real person” and learns to keep house. This allows her to reconcile with Tom and they are soon married.

When Lynn falls in love with Hank, he suggests she ask her mother to butt out. Francie understands she was trying to use Lynn's "life as a substitute for my own,” and apologises. Lynn and Hank get married and Francie becomes a normal mother and mother-in-law.

Synopsis: David’s family is poor but proud of its “heritage of blood and breeding.” He graduates with an engineering degree but thinks he’s too good to work “for a paltry few dollars a week.” David falls in love with working-class Linda, and David’s mother and father disapprove. David takes an entry-level job as a draughtsman to earn money to marry Linda but he resents it and they break up. When David’s father has a stroke and is admitted to a charity hospital, David realises what pride has cost them. He takes a labourer’s job in a steel mill and hopes to someday reconcile with Linda.

Synopsis: Art student Beth is saved from an accident by sailor Dirk. They fall in love but she’s afraid because her father was a sailor and was lost at sea. Beth convinces Dirk to take a job on shore and they become engaged, but Dirk is unhappy. When a ship founders on the rocks, Dirk leads the rescue attempt, over Beth’s objections. He saves the lives of the crew and Beth understands she’s been selfish. She and Dirk reconcile.
