||Helen dates Paul but asks him to stop gambling before they marry. Paul agrees and “the change was startling!” Helen discovers she doesn’t love the new, conservative Paul. She goes on vacation to think things over and meets Gabe, a “domineering, spoiled brute,” who ignores all of her “good advice” about changing his life. Gabe says Helen never loved Paul, she “loved reform, for reform’s sake!” Helen falls in love with Gabe.
