I am familiar with the process of using a slug to pay for something because I have done it myself - I used a schoolmate's "silver dot" to buy a copy of the OTTAWA SUN, which had just begun publication that summer, while coming home from school in the winter of 1988. I had found the "silver dot" - actually a slug about the size of a quarter - on the floor of the school where my schoolmate had dropped it in his haste to get to his own homeroom.
