For the life of me I could not read the scans of this story:  all I saw was a blue screen and a black dot.

Dunno. But both this Clue scan and the Crime & Punishment mentioned worked for me after conversion to .cbz files and viewed in FFView. Nice scans, too, BTW.

If you change the filename extension to .cbr, you can read it normally in cdisplay (or other comic-book reader software, I assume).
Or..... if you want to be able to view the individual .jpgs, first extract the scanfiles as you normally would. Then, load each scan in file-editing software and save it, overwriting the 'original'. You should now be able to view the scan. After doing the whole comic, you can re-save the images in a new .zip file if you prefer.

Since there have been no comments on this for some time, I assume that most have figured out that a *.zip file is probably neither a *.cbr or a *.rar file. So far, consistently, changing *.zip to *.cbz ("Comic Book Zip) works fine; changing *.rar to *.cbr ("Comic Book Roshal archive") also works. But .rar and .zip files use different compression algorhythms, so changing the name from *.rar to *.cbz will probably -- almost certainly -- not work, and the same is true of *.zip to *.cbr. This pedantic exercise is brought to you by the letter P.
