Little Nemo… and what can I do?
« on: July 25, 2016, 01:27:20 PM »
Greetings everyone…

Been a while.

I have been slowly working on cleaning Little Nemo hirez scans for over 5 years.
It is just a fun "clear the cobwebs in my head" thing I do, when I have some free time.

I see different books out there publishing Little Nemo books, etc… based on the pre-1927 strips.

1) the comic strips up to 1927 are in the public domain… correct?
2) I can create posters, bed sheets, etc… off of the artwork and sell it… correct?
3) If it all is in the public domain… when did it happen? Is there verifiable proof?

Thoughts?

George Peter Gatsis

P.S.

Yes, I did ask something along this line a while ago… Sorry, if it's supposed to be continued in the previous thread.
If not… Sorry, that I am sorry… I'm from Canada… :)

Hi George,
The magic cut-off date is 1923, not 1927.
Try reading this link which does a pretty good job of explaining it.

http://fairuse.stanford.edu/overview/public-domain/welcome/

The important part -
"Because of legislation passed in 1998, no new works will fall into the public domain until 2019, when works published in 1923 will expire. In 2020, works published in 1924 will expire, and so on."

And this might change again with the passing of the Trans Pacific Partnership.  It's an ugly mess.
