Looking for suggestions of comics with sidekick
« on: May 23, 2016, 08:07:36 PM »
Hi all - I'm new to these forums and am looking for some suggestions. I ended up on this site because I'm looking for public domain comics to use for a visual design project, I'll be editing/manipulating them. I'm specifically looking for 2 different categories of comics: first, comics with a hero plus a visible sidekick and, second, any comic with female hero who has a visible sidekick.

I would be very grateful if you could give me some suggestions of comics that are uploaded to this site (or another) that fit those categories (and are public domain).

Thanks!
- Mark

It might be shorter to make up a list of heroes without a sidekick.  ;)

I assume you mean a Robin-esque sidekick, usually in costume & sometimes a superhero style name?

Starting with Amazing Man Comics #23 & Stars & Stripes #4 Amazing Man gains a kid sidekick Tommy until the the end of both titles. (Centaur Comics)

Starting with Crackajack Funnies #32 The Owl gains a sidekick in Owl Girl. (Dell Comics)

Reg'lar Fellers Heroic Comics #14 was the first team-up of Hydroman & Rainbow Boy. Your mileage may vary about whether he's a true sidekick or a teenage hero who would occasionally team up with the older hero. (Eastern Color Printing)

There's lot more, but it's late. I'm sure the other posters will have suggestions.

Black Cat is probably the most famous female hero with a sidekick. There are lots of heroes with sidekicks Magno and Davey, The Shield and Dusty the Wizard and Roy, one you may not know is Boomerang with Diana in Terrific Comics, there is Catman and Kitten.

for me the obvious GA/PD choice would be The Black Terror and Tim/Kid Terror (aka The Terror Twins) from Black Terror and Exciting Comics.

Also in Catman Comics I believe both the Deacon & the Reckoner had kid assistants. BTW, both characters were more like the Spirit than Batman.

Over in Novelty's Target Comics, the Target had the Targeteers. They were two adult men, brothers, IIRC.

The Clock, who appeared in both Dell & Quality books, was assisted by Butch. Butch was a girl who dressed and lived like a slum tough guy.

At DC Simon & Kirby's Newsboy Legion tween / teens were regularly protected by the masked Guardian. Of course you won't find those stories here. (sigh)

In in the UK/Aussie/NZ section of DCM there are three issues of John Dixon's Australian version of Catman, who had the boy Kit as a costumed sidekick.

In the non-superhero arena, Quality's Black Roger (in Buccaneers) and Arizona Raines (Crack Western) both had boy sidekicks, who spent most of their time trying to keep the adult heroes away from women.
