And they've finally announced the book I've wanted for years...
« on: January 13, 2016, 01:18:28 AM »
http://hermespress.com/blogs/news/83913222-announcement-thomas-andrae-joins-hermes-press-as-special-projects-editor-his-first-book-to-be-an-archival-reprint-of-walt-kellys-peter-wheat

Simultaneously with that announcement, somebody went and created a Wikipedia page for Peter Wheat:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Wheat

This amuses me since, even if the references cite Thomas Buchanan, they're entries that were primarily written by me.  So it's the first time I'm aware of that I'm used as a wikipedia reference.

Oh, and to my amusement:  the scan of the cover of #27 they're using as the promo art is my scan; there's a small stain on the wing over the Pegasus's head that isn't on the copy Lone Star has up on eBay right now.   I should contact the publisher and see if there's anything I can help them with...

I see the announcement has no mention of Peter Wheat News.  Of course  35 16 page issues already is a 560 page book or a 280 page book if they print it two pages to a page. Even that smaller page count is a big book for comic reprints.

But it should be great -- I hope.

Well, it's about bloody time!
And you most assuredly deserve a comp copy!

We shall see, Jon.  The collection is described as "archival" and "in-depth" in the press release, but I didn't see the word "complete" in there.  Or "single volume", for that matter.

I've contacted the publisher, offering any help I can give; but haven't heard back from them yet.

I agree with Yoc,  you should get a comp copy, you deserve one with all of the work you have done for the preservation of the series.  Good Luck with the publisher.

Dr. Thomas Andrae has done a lot of books, articles etc. on Carl Barks and I have his book on Carl Barks and the Disney Comic Book to read. Keep us posted on the book , sounds like it may be good reference book.

Sadly, the main reason I suspect you haven't heard from the publisher, CB, is that they're afraid you're going to ask them for {GASP!} some sort of financial remuneration. In that game, even a comp copy may be a stretch for them, as anything that might be tacitly or implicitly taken as an acknowledgement on their part of any substantive contribution by you (or anyone apart from Tom Andrae-- and unless his doctorate is in "Comics" from whatever institution might spit those out, it has as much weight as Bill Cosby's PhD has on his credits for a sit-com. End of screed.) might be used in some evidential way in a claim against them for compensation. And from their description, they're looking at this book as being primarily for the library market -- including educational institutions-- no matter how many of us are frothing at the mouth to see a collection of Kelly work given what we can inly hope is the loving attention the work deserves (as opposed to the sort of half-assed attention PS Artbooks gave to the Stanley Morse reprints. Don't get me started), and that will mean a lower print-run and a higher price, but not a great source of cash-flow for a publisher of any size, even if it will end up being more cash-flow than any of us are getting for our efforts here.

And besides, these are just the sorts of things that corporate lawyers do to make the money Publishers and others fork over, bless their hearts.

Good news anyway, we'll see what it turns out to be when it slides out into the world.

To be fair, when I posted that I had contacted the publisher, it had only been a few minutes ago.

I have heard back from them, not much detail yet but they know I'm out here and willing to help, and they've indicated they can and will use it.  I'm not going to discuss that in any more detail for now; other than to note I have exactly zero expectation of any renumeration other than a comp copy hopefully, depending on how much I actually do for them.  I'm painfully aware this is a bit of a niche book, although I think it might do better than the Pogo comic book collections- those at least have either been reprinted or are not difficult to track down originals, while even some serious Kelly fans can't find Peter Wheat issues.

And it IS excellent news! Also very gratifying if you're able to make a contribution in any way.
Good for you, Eric!

I sure hope it's not another outrageously expensive book and they don't go the Archives route with garish re-colouring.

But but but... isn't that the way it's supposed to be done?

...And then I woke up.
