Images of museums in comics
« on: July 16, 2015, 12:13:17 PM »
Dear fans, experts and aficionados,

I do research for a public lecture on the question: How are museums presented in comics?
With which weird clichés and funny stereotypes did classical comic artists show museums?
 :-/

I found some wonderful examples, which present museums as temples of the arts, with greek columns at the entrance, the inside full of treasures, mummies, strange modern paintings, bizarre sculptures and, of course, dinosaur skeletons (regardless which kind of museum it may be).
Museums in classical comics seem to be crowded with bad guys like robbers, ghosts, mummies that wake up in the middle of the night, and kids and little dogs that crush valuable ancient greek vases or steel bones from the dinosaur skeletons...

To make it short: I loved these stereotypes and want to do a lecture about the subject. But didn't find too many examples.
So please help me, if you can remember any pics of museums in comic strips or comic books.
Thanks for your help,  :D
best,
Alexander

Hi Jim,
I suggest going to the Grand Comics Database here - http://www.comics.org/Search for 'museum' and you should find a lot or results.  Then come back and check for pre1960 books on their list and you might have better luck.

There was a nice series called Space Museum in DC's Strange Adventures.  It ran every third issue starting around #100 and running through around #160. It consisted of a father and son going to a museum and the father telling the son the story of why that odd thing was in the museum.  It was drawn by Infantino.

Not available here, of course, but worth checking out if you can.

Thanks, guys!
The space museum in Strange Adventures sounds great, I'll search for it.
And thanks so much for the story with the walking statues, it's an amazing story with great art work.

Another interesting hero regarding museum activities is hawkman, working in a museum as an archaeologist.
And I found gorgeous museum adventures in the funnies, like Abbott and Costello adventures or stories with the little rascals.

Best,
JungleJim

Just read “Death’s Vengeance” from WEB OF EVIL #16.

Curator Arthur Dunster collects Aztec relics of horror.
When museum visitors laugh at his stories, the ancient artifacts come to life and prove their truth by killing the explorers who desecrated their tombs.

You find the book here:

Museums are run by madmen, you know?
