Thank you and a question
« on: September 27, 2014, 01:34:04 AM »
First off thank you to every one here. I first got into Golden Age comics when my Uncle gave me what was left of his comic collection in 1978.It was mostly Classics Illustrated and various MJL titles. So finding this site and getting to read all kinds of great comics has been a godsend.

Now I got a question. My youngest son is 10. And wanting to read one horror comic a day for all of October. If yall don't mind what are some good horror comics for a 10 year old. His mother and I are somewhat lenient on what we let him watch or read. He has already read a bunch of my EC comics reprints.

Welcome to the site!  Probably the "best" horror books we have here are the Harvey Books, but those can be a bit extreme even compared to the EC's, so I would check them first.  In fact, just check everything first; I don't want to suggest a particular book and then have it be too extreme for a 10 year old.  ACG is generally (but not always) a bit milder while still being firmly pre-code; and Strange Terrors from St. John has some Kubert art in the mix, which is always nice.  I would avoid Charlton's The Thing; it has some great Ditko art but is notoriously gruesome even by pre-code standards.

Those would be my first suggestions in the horror department; although when dealing with pre-code horror for somebody of that age I repeat:  check it first yourself!

Greeting, Newt!

I am the resident pre-code horror expert around here.
If your son already has been in contact with EC, well, then he can probably stomach anything out there.
 ;D

Eric is right, though. Charlton stuff is pretty grusome (read all about it on website posted below).
And I would avoid books from Story/Master and Key/Gilmore.
Those are just rip-offs, steals and swipes without any literary merit to them.
And the products of the Iger Studio (printed in books from Ajax-Farrell and Superior) are just too weird for kids.

I did extensive research on some companies and wrote down my findings in these websites you can check if you like.
