Do You Like TARGET COMICS?
« on: June 07, 2014, 06:58:45 PM »
When I started collecting Golden Age U.S. comics I sampled a bunch of titles. One such was Target Comics vol. 3 #3.

The Target was different and fun. I liked the Chameleon, too, but this version was a lot different than the one very late strip I had in a Super-Comics reprint.

But I really loved Basil Wolverton's Spacehawk. But he didn't last too much longer, being dumped (Some speculate in fear of parental objections.) in favor of Dan'l Flannel, a cross between Dr. Doolittle & the Beverly Hillbillies. UGH!

Fast forward about fifty years. I need to write a story for the new issue of the on-line mag Pulp Spirit. Can I find another Public Domain character that would have been at home in the pulps? Who better than Pete Stockbridge - the Chameleon? Soon I was writing the story "Targeting the Chameleon." Given the title, guess who co-stars in the story.

The story, along with a bit of background, is here:

I hope you enjoy the story. Please post comments.

Best,
Erwin K. Roberts

Thanks Erwin!
BTW, I finished reading your sampler and really enjoyed the Black Monk and Dr Watson in NYC stories as well as the last story i believe you say you wrote as a teen.  Thanks for letting me read them!

Do I like Target Comics? Go look at who did, if not most of the scans we have, a heck of a lot of them.  ;D  I'll give your story a look as soon as I can, it sounds like a lot of fun!

OtherEric,

I sure had a LOT of fun writing the story. Plus, I downloaded so many issues to use as references that I made a donation to DCM for the bandwidth.

I write a lot of what is called New Pulp fiction. Plug "Erwin K. Roberts" into an Amazon search you will see, along with a bunch of derek, about twelve books I've written, or contributed stories to. Another one The Masked Rider - Tales of the Wild West vol. 2 should be released in before the end of June by Airship-27. {/end plug}

The folks at Planetary Stories let me pretty much let me write on subjects I choose. Yoc sorta crunched two names together in his reply. He meant the Black Dwarf a/k/a the Blue Monk. My next story for Pulp Spirit will feature either Walter Gibson's Spurs Jackson & his Space Vigilantes, or Charlton's first Mystery Man Yellowjacket, who was a pulp writer.

If you go to  http://www.planetarystories.com/pulpSpirit.html you will find links to the issues of Pulp Spirit. I have stories in every issue except #2 & (I think) #18. No sign-in required. Just start reading.

Ironic screen name, BTW. My adult son is named Eric.

And, Yoc,

Glad you enjoyed the sampler. Dr. Watson's American Adventure was released two years ago now. I'm currently stalled about one third of the way thru the sequel.

D'Oh, sorry about the Dwarf.  Would you believe I'm colour blind?
I enjoyed the PDF format file.  It works with my Nook.  Unfortunately it doesn't like HTML as much for reading.

I vote for Yellowjacket!  Buzz buzz!
