Question about Dell's Ben Bowie and His Mountain Men
« on: November 08, 2013, 08:02:17 AM »
I'm doing some research for a blog post on Dell's Ben Bowie and His Mountain Men. I think he appeared in a half-dozen issues of Four Color, then got his own book. The numbering on his book started with #7 and ended with #17. (If I've gotten this wrong, please don't hesitate to correct me.)

If I've got my facts straight, then that probably means that Ben Bowie replaced another title on Dell's publishing schedule, but kept the numbering of the original title. If this is true, does anyone know what title it replaced?

The GCD is the best source for into like this K.
They also have an email mailing list where questions can be discussed as well.

Thank you. Of course, the likely answer occurred to me after I posted the question. If Ben had six appearances in Four-Color, then his own book simply took this into account and began with #7. I'll check for confirmation of this, though.

Yoc, thanks again for the link. The GCD confirms six Four Color appearances, with Ben Bowie own book starting at #7 because of this. Exactly what I needed.

Yes this is correct. When Dell gave a series to a feature that had had a number of Four Color issues, they usually counted those issues (though they sometimes counted wrong Donald Duck had 29 Four Color issues, though they started his comic with #27). They didn't always do it.  Dick Tracy, for example, began with #1 though he'd had earlier Four Color issues.
