Top Rated Comics vs Your Favorite GA Comics
« on: June 23, 2013, 01:40:18 PM »
Yesterday I was scrolling through the Top Rated Comics list when I realized I may not totally understand how those comics are being rated.

I had always assumed that the rating was based on what readers like best (story, art, content) but now I think it's only based on the scan quality (or perhaps some mix of the two?)

What made me think this was because I didn't see Marvel Family 10 which I consider to be one of the all time great GA comics. (I'll readily admit, I may be alone in that judgement.)

With that in mind - what do you consider to be one of the all time great GA comics in public domain?

Note: If this is already an existing topic, I apologize. I searched on Top Rated Comics and didn't seem to find a relevant response.

I tend to rate on scan quality over contents Jim.
The Humdinger v1 #1 that just went up is pretty cool.
The Peter Wheats are a lovely series as well.

This is totally idiosyncratic, but I love the work (both scripting and art) of Klaus Nordling and consider The Barker (a Quality title) to be one of the all-time great GA comics. I don't suppose that "tasty" or "sweet" are exactly adjectives that ring the bells of most comic fans, but both come to mind in describing The Barker, just as they come to mind in describing the Peter Wheat comics that Yoc praised (and I second his endorsement of those). I was already aware of the Barker stories before discovering DCM, but I owe a debt to GAC and DCM for turning me on to Peter Wheat.

I also like HG Peter's work in Heroic Comics.

I tend to agree that the rating numbers (which I rarely actually remember to use to rate books) primarily reflect the scan quality, not the actual quality of the book.

And thank you both for the praise of the Peter Wheat books.  I take no small pride in having shared those with so many people, even if I have shot myself in the foot for filling in the last holes by doing so.
