I sent Young Brides #1 to Yocitrus with an opening card which I have put in pdf format.

I also sent all my own data on Young Brides to the GCD, filling about every hole they had (except maybe one or two). It usually takes a couple of months for my data to be entered, but if anyone knows one of the handlers and can tell them I have done these, and my Young Romances and will be doing my Young Love's, they can maybe get a move on...

I will... there are a few I think I should know, but just can't place. Like the artist who did The Pianist and Dream Love in Young Brides #22. Or maybe the guy who did the second story just did the inking? It looks like Severin inked by Starling and I know it isn't. He/they also did That Manning Boy in #23.

And then there is the artist who did Slum Girl in YB #15 looks familiar as well. He also ends up doing some very quick and sloppy work in later issues of Young Romance...

And who is that guy who draws as if it's Roy Lichtenstein copying Jack Kirby on the two page Dan Wilson story in YB #23? He also turns up in the later romance books, when Kirby himself was back as well.

And while we are at it... who is the artist who is all over the early romance and crime books doing some sort of fat Jack Davis like inking and who's most telling trait to me are the scalloped shadown inbetween the fingers? Could it be Carmine Infantino? He often works together with Broderick/and or that artist that gives everyone button noses.

I'd love to see your records, because there are so many holes still...

Yes to Simon's inks on first, but with help from shop - probably Marvin Stein.
Freak Murder - def. Meskin pencils. Not Draut on inks. Probably early Bruno Premiani.
Hideaway Town is probably Premiani pencils (and inks with Simon) over Kirby layouts.

Headline #33:
Simon inks on cover
Simon (& shop, inc. John Severin) inks on Premeditated Homicide
Kirby pencils and Simon and shop inks on Gun-Happy Robber and layouts only and shop only on Booby Trap.
Ominous Dream is John Severin pencils and most likely Will Elder inks.
Shattered Alibi is a puzzler. I SHOULD know who this is, but am drawing a blank. I will think on it.

Headline #34:
Blackhearted Tony - Kirby pencils, Simon/Kirby/Co. inks
Outlaw Down-Under - I'd guess A.C. Hollingsworth inks.
Twenty-Second Story Man - It's REALLY hard to assign either pencils or inks to Stallman on this.  Maybe he WROTE it?
Double-Cross - John Severin pencils, Belfi? inks
Medium Murder Case - Leonard Starr pencils. ? inks.

Headline #35:
you have these mixed in with #33.
"Arsonist" cover is def. Kirby pencils w/strong Simon inks.
Dead or Alive - Kirby pencils and maybe he does some of the inks, but the majority is shop.
The Deadly Gilas! - John Severin pencils, perhaps Vic Donahue or R.Q. Sale inks.
Great Mouthpiece
Georgie's Last Ride is Draut pencils, but inks by someone like Bernard Sachs. Weird.
Golf Links Murder - Stallman pencils only. S&K shop inks.

Real West Romances
#1:
Medicine Show - pencils by someone like Win Mortimer or Art Peddy. Inks probably by Bernard Sachs (maybe his pencils, too?).
Chuck Wagon Jane - any possibility that Premiani is inking this?
Heart Rustler - VERY puzzling. Signs of Simon, Donahue Roussos, Premiani, Stein, etc. Nice work like page 2 panel 4 opposed with terribly-drawn horses like in page 4 panel 3. Many heads don't really fit the bodies. The only person I DON'T see here is Kirby.

#2:
Heart Broken Bronco Buster is primarily Bernard Sachs. There may be some other penciler under him here, but he's obliterated him.
Dead-Game Dude - Draut pencils, but inks maybe by Belfi or maybe even Premiani. The inker is a good artist, too.
Rough-House Annie - solid Donahue story. An under-rated artist.
Family Feud - same artist as in that Headline #33, but NOW I know who it is: Ann Brewster! Positively her inks, probably her pencils - or else George Gregg's.

#3:
In Love With His Ranch Boss - Draut's pencils, too.
Love at the County Fair - someone is inking Donahue here, perhaps Bill Elder???
Our Love Wore Six Guns - This is George Gregg.

#4:
The Perfect Cowboy - Marvin Stein pencils, Simon and shop inks. I don't see Kirby. When Jack inks stuff, he turns it into KIRBY. You can't see another penciler under a Kirby ink job.
Lovin' or Feudin' - Probably Draut P&I. Def. his pencils.
Cupid's Corral - I agree, Severin & probably Elder, but why didn't they sign? I think addition inkers on first few pages.
Bartered - S&K shop inks on Donahue.
The Yearling Years - pure Premiani.

#5:
Mail-Order Romance - probably Premiani aping what he considers Kirby and inks by Simon and Shop. I don't see the Kirby you're indicating.
Tenderfoot in Love - Gorgeous pure Meskin. Even signed.
Bordertown Lover - No doubt that it's Draut, and almost certainly his own inks.
Glamour in the Great Outdoors - Again, Draut pencils but different inks. Kirby seems to have had a hand in the "instructional panel".
Yellow - no doubt that it's Starr, but is he inking, too? If not, who?

#6:
Ella Mae! - yes, Starr.
A Killin'... - Premiani again. Very distinctive when he inks his own stuff.
Lies, Love... - subtle signs of Roussos in the inks.
Broadway Buckaroo - certainly Starr again, but perhaps inked by Frank Bolle?

#7:
No Man's Land - Premiani
Gal for Goliath - Starr pencils. Starr and ? inks
Loves of a Navaho Princess - Art Peddy pencils. S&K Studio inks. No Kirby.
Cowboy with a Complex IS Marvin Stein pencils and I see some Premiani in the inks along with S&K Studio hands.

I will answer you personally. As I said, these are some pretty early records and I don't think I am ready to go public with them yet. I really should let the GCD people know that when I put down a name in brackets it is a pretty personal guess, so they should really put it in with a question mark. At least your lists will a. get some of the kinks out and b. help me revisit the books.

Isn't it a bit dark? Uually when I edit my stuff, the first thing I do is take out the brown noise. It effects the colors very little. Do you want me to do that on future scnas or do people actually like them this way (at least you can furter edit them for yourself now)?

Thanks for the scans!

I think they look very good. When I edit scans, I try to punch up the colors a little and remove some of the yellowing/browning, but not to the point of making the paper completely white, or the colors fluorescent. Ink fades over time, and paper yellows. I try to ask myself "how did this book look when it was on the newsstand?" and then I try for that appearance. I know that I don't always succeed, but sometimes, time is less kind to a particular book, so you do the best you can.

Hi Ger,
It's all in the eye of the beholder.  I know many that want a scan to look as much like the book Currently looks at scanning time.  Others like Snard above aim for it to look more like it did at the time of Sale.  If you'd like me to try to lighten the yellow I can do that for the Young Brides book you sent me to edit.  Trial and error, eventually I'll find the level of edit you are most comfortable with seeing.
