Hello from a golden-age villain fan
« on: November 05, 2011, 04:39:10 PM »
Hi!
I discovered DCM several months ago, but took me a while to figure out a way to get registered. Finally succeeded! My name, Mark Carlson, has come up in the Holyoke discussion line, about some early work I did about twenty years in trying to establish links between the smaller companies. Sadly, most of my work was before I had a computer and is just typed out the old way. Anyway, the last few years I've been working on hero descriptions, and among the more major characters, their supporting characters and issues that various reoccuring villains appeared in. I've traveled to Michigan State University a couple of times to utilize Bails' microfilms in that effort. I've dug into a fair number of Monte Hale Westerns and Don Winslow of the Navy issues to try and identify the full reach of their very developed but under discussed rogue's galleries. I am cross-indexing and especially interested in identifying ethnic minority characters. As I'm teaching psychology (how to do therapy, clinically supervise, and the history of psychology) at a graduate level these days and hope to translate some of this stuff into a journal article or two.
I tend not to log on consistently, so forgive me if I might be slow in responding to a reply.
I much admire the work here. The site is a joy to visit.

I saw your message to Jim earlier, and I'm glad to see you start an open thread. I'm also fond of good golden age villains, because a hero without a decent villain is pretty darned bland Don Winslow, especially in the Fawcett incarnation, does have a number of interesting villains; I can't say I'm familiar with Monte Hale's comic book appearances but I'll undoubtedly take a look at some sooner than later now. I will keep an eye out for minority characters; I imagine you are familiar with the more obvious ones (Whitewash Jones, Ebony White, Freezum, Little Beaver, Snowball, Ali Baba, Tommy Tomahawk, Filapino Kid, and so on). I'll certainly understand if you don't put in many appearances on the message board.

I'm sure I'm not the only one glad to have you here.

 Take care,
 Jon

Liste of Monte Hale villains on Golden-Age Villain thread

Thank you for your warm greeting. Thanks for the suggestions of ethnic characters. I am familiar with those, but am happily finding more here in the DCM. What you say is so true about heroes and villains, I think. It can get pretty boring watch a super-hero take on gangsters or anonymous Nazis every issue.
If you're interested in GA villains you may want to check out a thread I've started here. (Trying to get my feet wet!) For your possible interest in Monte Hale, I've included appearances of the most notable ones. I will try to post a similar list, and plea, for Don Winslow and Captain Midnight.
