Childhood Comic Story Memories
« on: October 05, 2011, 08:33:06 AM »
Late last night, I found another horror story I remembered from my early childhood which was in an issue of Harvey's Witch's Tales; I believe it is the 4th horror story I recalled which I have been able to identify and I've also found other stories from Charlton, Quality, and one or two other companies I recalled which aren't horror. It's interesting to see what such stories were actually like compared to the way I remembered them, and I couldn't help wondering how many others have had similiar experiences with the material available here?

Not from the material here, but there was a science fiction story I remembered reading in a comic book in my barber's waiting area in the late '60s. All I remembered was the plot and the story title. Thanks to the GCBD, I located that story almost 40 years later and found the issue of DC's "Tales of the Unexpected" that it was in. My memories of it held up pretty well.

On a related note, a classmate of mine from high school contacted me several years ago. When her mother was a little girl, she fell through the ice of a frozen pond, and was rescued by a passing merchant marine. The true-life story was published in Heroic Comics #39. My friend's copy of the issue was destroyed in a fire, and I helped her find a replacement. Last week, I learned of the Digital Comics Museum, and found that issue in the archives. I sent her the link, and she's grateful to now have another version of the story to show her kids and grandkids.

That is cool. Not that she fell thru the ice, that you found this place.

That is a great story, not only that she survived but that the event was selected for inclusion in Heroic, and that you were able to connect her children and grandchildren with a source for the story. No one is going to top that.
