@ArKay: We should ask Mike Howlett who owns the right to Eerie Pubs. He should know.

@jrvandore+ArKay: Of course synopses are optional on GCD, Rainer! You don't have to do 'em.
I am doing them for all the horror books I scan. So I can keep track of certain topics and do searches for stories...

And I used the day to sneak up another trashy romance book - from Key, o gosh!

IDEAL ROMANCE #3

I am close to owning 100 Eerie Pubs books now and so far I have read maybe 4 or 5.   :-X  So no handwritten synopses from me anytime soon.

I found this about the Zombie Factory book:

Quote
It's not clear who (if anyone ) now owns the reprint rights to the Eerie comics. According to Mike Howlett's comprehensive overview of the Fass publishing empire, in 1976, increasing acrimony between Myron Fass and Countrywide co-executive Stanley R. Harris (Fass actually fired a bullet through the wall of his office and into Harris's) led to the latter man's departure to form Harris Publications. Harris took with him the rights to publish the horror titles.

No one knows if Stanley Harris and Harris Publications, which is still in operation ('Vampirella' is one of its more well-known titles), intends to release the Eerie equivalent of the affordable softcover compilations for Old School comics, as the Marvel 'Essentials' series or the DC 'Showcase' series have done.

And then...

[Presumably the Eerie comics presented in 'Zombie' are in the Public Domain, but I'm not one to quibble over licensing rights.]

Romance comics, getting soft in your old days? :)

Well, apart from being a pre-code horror fanatic, I'm doing all kind of scans in all genres.
Our JVJ-Jim brings me packs of old books - and I like to fill gaps in companies or titles.
So you'll find me uploading crime, western, romance, funny animal and war - besides the horror stuff.
Just providing service, ma'am...

And you gotta admit some of the art in the romance books like St. John was amazing!

I take everything but romance.  Don't think I will ever be in the mood for those, got plenty of other stuff in the queue.

Nice work ArKay!

BTW, could we perhaps get you to share pages like these at half-size in the future.  Just to save some space on the server and it would make reading the topic easier.
Just a suggestion.

I'm saving you plenty of space, those are just links to the images on my private page ;)  I don't usually upload stuff to every page I post.  I have a 27" monitor with a high resolution so to me those pages don't appear to be all that big.  I apologize if they are over the top.  I have scaled them down to 50%.

This is an example of a slightly modified comic, they only added some black here and there.  The original book hasn't been uploaded here, but I found this first page in an eBay auction.
It would have been nice to compare them panel by panel.  It's originally from Ajax/Farrell's Haunted Thrills #6.

True... I think half of the horror comics are about love or lack thereof though  :D

This one has actually been one of my favorite Eerie stories so far, that's why I had scanned it.
The original Haunted Thrill goes for a lot of money, otherwise I would have bought it.
It's in 3 different Eerie issues as well.

It reminds me of the movie Mannequin.  Maybe it was the inspiration for that?

Could have been the other way round as well since this movie was a remake of a 1948 picture.

And up now is another missing book from Key (no one has missed, though).
Just filling gaps, and this is NO horror book.

PRIZE MYSTERY #2

But, guys, attention, please.
Mike Howlett got back to me - concerning the copyrights to Eerie Pubs:

While working on the WEIRD WORLD book, I made many attempts to contact Stanley Harris about the rights of the Pubs and he would never get back to me.
Eventually, he had some kid call me and say "We no longer have the rights to CREEPY and EERIE", which of course meant the warren stuff. They had no recollection of The Eerie Pubs. Since the last published stories from Harris were in 1982, I feel we're all safe.
The stories were all plagiarized in the first place so I doubt they were EVER submitted for actual copyright. I searched the US Copyright website and never found anything. Some (not much!) Fass and Harris stuff, but no Eerie.
In the years since the WEIRD WORLD OF... book was published, I was waiting to get a phone call or letter saying I owed someone money, but it hasn't come!
So, I feel pretty safe doing the WORST OF... book (which is almost done) and comfortable saying the stuff is in the Public Domain.

I thought as much!

Very interesting, thanks T!
How did Prize Comics not print Prize Mystery?  Tsk tsk.

Many thanks for the info on Eerie Publications as well.  Sounds like another case of 'orphan works' where somebody holds the rights but doesn't know or care about them.  They fall after our 1959 cut-off date and frankly I'd have trouble making them a part of DCM given their very graphic covers, etc.  Call me a prude I guess.  I wonder if they show up on CB+ some day?

Maybe I should put the ones I have up somewhere for download.  They are out there, but not easy to find for most people.
And it would be nice to have a completely scanned collection as well one day. :)
