DCM: the quintessence of cool
« on: July 15, 2011, 12:39:57 AM »
UNESCO ought to declare the DCM the world's first virtual World Heritage Site! It certainly meets their definition as a place of "special cultural or physical significance."

Having stumbled blindly through the door, I was guttered by what I found: a glittering trove of rare cultural treasures. It reminded me of the time, not long ago, when I drove through the outskirts of a small rural town and unexpectedly came upon a working drive-in theater. It's that amazing. I'm especially astonished to find so many of those great crime, horror and sci-fi comics, with their gorgeous and spectacularly lurid artwork.

I'm dumbstruck with humility and gratitude for the scanners who not only found this material, but have gone to the trouble of sharing it with the rest of us. High kudos to everyone who has helped create this amazing resource.

Wow, are we blushing?  ;)
Thanks for the kind words KF.  And LOVE the avatar.  Great movie!
DCM is built on the kindness of 100s of generous scanners (Check our anniversary topic in the News section for a list)  Without them and generous donations we would be a shadow of this wonderful site.

Enjoy the goodies and feel free to join in on any topic here on the forum.

Thanks, Yoc! And what a great website, The Swan Archives (http://www.swanarchives.org/)! I recently saw Paradise again after several years, and I liked it even better. A strange, funny, phantasmagorical little movie that has a special place in my heart. It's odd how it just died everywhere but Winnipeg, yet the equally campy Rocky Horror Picture Show--which came out only a year later--went on to become a midnight-movie phenomenon. (Now that would've made a fantastic double-feature!)

Glad you liked the site K.  The production notes are fun and reading how adding Paul Williams changed everything is fun too.

Agreed, Canada can be funny at times.  We took to Supertramp quicker than anywhere else too.  That's good or bad depending on your music tastes.

Wanna talk double features - I saw "Yellow Submarine" and The Monkey's "Head" in the same night back in the 90s!

I remember when both of these movies came out first run in Phoenix.  I saw Phantom of the Paradise then as it played for a few weeks but Rocky Horror tanked quickly and I didn't see it until a year or two later when the Sombrero Playhouse became one of the first theaters to pick it up as a midnight movie.

Out here in Phoenix we're lucky enough to still have two working drive-in theaters.  They are both multi-screen facilities and opened up back in the later 1970s just about the time that all of the older drive-ins were starting to close.  When I was a kid in the 1960s we had quite a number of drive-ins in the Phoenix area because we have good enough weather for them to run year round.  However after the housing boom that started in the 1970s prices on land started escalating and all of the old single screen drive-ins were gone by the mid 1980s.
