Proposal - Starting A Comic Buying/Scanning Group
« on: April 27, 2011, 02:10:53 PM »
These rare treasures are being lost everyday to collectors or speculators, who may not be interested in having the comic book scanned and preserved, and that is their
perogative.

I have held discussions with other members of the collecting community, regarding forming a "purchasing group" and supported by member donations, to purchase these unscanned comics. The comics could then be scanned. The scans circulated in normal fashion, and the original comic be placed on Ebay once again to recoup some of the funds (perhaps all or more) for replenishing the treasury for purchasing yet other needed titles.

Such an endeavor should not be affiliated with DCM directly, but consideration to DCM guidelines should be made.

Just curious to see what others may think of such an undertaking.

I have contacted another who may be interested in spearheading such an effort, and I await a reply.

Your thoughts please

Hi Jay,
To avoid this post being lost in the eBay messages I gave it it's own topic.

To recap for you, Jay, the idea comes up once in a while (here and GAC), but never seems to come together as anything.  My guess (with no consultation with anybody else) is that it's because it's always presented as "an idea," rather than "I've set this up, am doing this, and am taking donations."  It's a good idea, but lacks the bulldozer to sweep everybody up.

That's all to say that you shouldn't be discouraged by a lack of response, and if you need help getting it off the ground, ask away.  Quite a few people are looking for such a thing, so I'd expect it to get loud, once it's running, but sadly not much before.

It might also depend on the book being considered for purchase.
Something 'exciting' might bring more interest.
Just a thought.

Also announce your choices as some maybe already available for scanning, just not released yet, shouldn't have to buy something someone else already has.
Just a heads up for buying books. I've had it happen to me even with telling folks I have the book ready to scan and it was on my pile, they'd go ahead and release a scan they found on the net. I will eventfully release those books even though someone else already did, they've just been bumped backdown on my scan pile list.

The last time I remember someone suggesting a book to purchase via a "bid club", it was Phantom Lady 17, and hardly anyone expressed interest in joining. I can't think of a more exciting book than that - but maybe that one was too expensive. (And in the end, it did get purchased & scanned by a private individual)

I've participated in these in the past for various issues.  A couple I recall are one of the last three issues of All American (when it cover-featured Johnny Thunder but hadn't yet become AAWestern.  Another was one of the last few issued of Advs into the Unknown.

This tends to work when someone spearheads it for some particular issue and not as a general "club".  Unless the group is close-knit I suspect it would degenerate into "discussions" about which comics to pursue.

Whoa, talk about a pricey book!
And if it's like Green Giant you'd be shocked at how bad it was printed.
Or so I've heard that about GG.

You can get one from Metropolis in G http://www.metropoliscomics.com/bookSearch.php??aSearchPos=down&searchType=alpha&display=list&set=0&front_image=&price=0&mod_date=&style=&has_scan=&discount=&grouplot=&title=COLOSSUS%20COMICS for $660  2.5 and not CGC so wouldn't have to cut it open.  The Goal would be to resell on Ebay.  I would think this would go between 400-550 on ebay,  so probable a healthy loss for every issue scanned.

This guy also take offers but doesn't go down much.
I myself would like to finish off Capt Aero  :-)

I could take point on some of this ??  I have a healty ebay ID for reselling / buying..  but as long as all know that we could loose on each transaction we would be fine.

I don't know that it's such a good idea, from my POV.  I suppose two or three friends might be able to swing it, but if you get a whole group involved, it's too easy for something to go wrong.  Especially when you're talking about money.  I buy what I can when I can, and I'm not going to be able to afford pricey books.  Even as a collaborator.
