Geo, close, but not the first. You have to read the interviews with Al and then use GCD to find the story.

Pot Shot Pete is indeed in JW #5, narf. Kurtzman must have retained the rights to the work he did at Toby?

Jim (|:{>

Then is it "Thin Ice on Shell Bank Creek" from a book we don't have scanned yet here?
No it can't be as this story as it was published in November 1948 (even though it's stated as first strip work, 2 pages worth) and the one I posted before was published in August 1948, (I'll give the name of the book those pictures are from after this is answered).
I'm going to keep looking through my books for it.
I do have a book with some sketches from 1947 that Al did.

Think I've got it now, how about Wonder Comics #20 Oct. 1948, "The Last Three Dimes" story with FF inking?

Jim,  was it?  "The Ugliest Horse in the World"  not sure the issue? Famous Funnies # ??

Just go to GCD, search [Story Title] for "ugliest horse". So simple.

Right on, RH!
And unsigned, too, so ID would be difficult - especially since few people collect Famous Funnies for their NEW content, and fewer still would be able to discern Williamson this early.

Jim I did see the reference to "The Ugliest Horse in the World" from Famous Funnies in one of the interviews. Whats funny is there were three stories that were his first work from three different interviews from the books I have and each was a different first work/story. That tells you how confusing this can get for checking out information on these folks.

By the way folks the pixs I posted are from Famous Funnies #169 on the Al Williamson art work.

I haven't read those interviews in decades, Geo. One mentions his first "strip" ("Thin Ice..") and another his first "work" (the aforementioned "Ugliest Horse"). What's the third?

I, too, have a copy of FF #169. I thought I recognized those illoes.

That is a good issue of Silver Streak, and the inclusion of "The Adventure of the laughing Hyenas" story is remarkable for the time, since it deals with a secret society which lynches Blacks and has a page showing a Black man defending his family from white racists. Remarkable the things one can find in comics books.
