How to Open Files Labeled "octet-stream"
« on: November 03, 2010, 01:12:44 PM »
I have downloaded a number of files that list the application as "octet-stream."

They will display just fine in the Preview format here on the site, but I cannot find a program that will open them on my PC.

Any help for viewing these type of files?

Thanks.

Geo,
It looks like these are files that don't have a file type ending.  ie .rar,.zip, etc.
Once I'm back home I can fix these without having to reupload them most likely.

I was going to track them down by the download ID # then find the coresponding RWD file in the download folder, rename it properly and re add the file with Mass Upload.  It's a bit time consuming but saves the bandwidth of reuploading from scratch.

If there was possible to have a script check all our files to confirm the have a file type that would be a Big benifit to the staff.

Nothing wrong with filetypes of these files as all of them have correct extensions in database.

Problem seems to be if filename too big the script cuts end of so basically an example is:
Captain Marvel Adventures 141

Real File name is: Captain_Marvel_Adventures_141_(1953)_(c2c)_(Darkmark-DCP)1.cbr

When you download it it shows file name as: Captain_Marvel_Adventures_141_(1953)_(c2c)_(Darkmark-DCP)

If I remove the 1 before the .cbr in the database it works perfectly :-s

Have fixed all ones I have found. If you noticed anymore please let me know.

But basically if you see them just give them a .cbr extension and they work perfectly

Thanks for that info Capt.
Can you add that to the upload page?

"File name not to be more than 45 characters in length Including file type."

Or a Javascript check on the field to say, "nuh-uh" would probably be better, so nobody's stuck at four in the morning trying to count to forty-five...
