Microfilm scans
« on: August 23, 2010, 11:02:01 AM »
I've just unearthed an old roll of Jerry Bails microfilm which, in more-or-less crummy black-and-white (not a jibe at Mr. Bails; that's all he had to work with) has scans of BIG SHOT #6-10 and JUMBO COMICS #5-14.  I'm thinking about going to the library and seeing what results I can get with a printer up there.  But...if any of you guys have scanning capacities for a roll of microfilm and wouldn't mind taking on the challenge, we might get some holds filled thusly.

I have some of those (actually I've cut them apart and created fiche of them as there are designed sleeves to do this.  I would be quite surprised if it were worth the effort to try to scan them, but if anyone wants to try I can send some (I think I still have them but am not sure.  I mostly had titles that have since been scanned from paper so I might have discarded them.  (And actually what I have is likely not PD thinking of that.

Does anyone have a copy of Rolster guide to scanning fiche. JVJ wants to try his hand at scanning some of my fiche files.

I'd ask Snard.  I'd ask Ontology too, but he's been so busy I've not seen him on in forever.

If microfilm scans or digital pictures is something someone wants to tackle, I have a number of duplicate rolls Jerry sent me before he died to work on updating Who's Who. I had completely forgotten about them until this thread, and I'd be happy to pass them along for fills. But as Mark said, they are pretty crummy copies, and might not even be worth the time to do. I'll leave that up to someone else to decide. Here's a sample image I did a while back, I think from a laser printout. It is probably average of what the film looks like:

Email sent to Jim.

That's a nice offer Eric.
Are they in b&w or is this just the print out?

They are in b&w except for his microfilm of Mary Perkins On Stage (I think.  It might have been Apartment 3-G.)

Ah, thanks Jon.
Still for some books these might be the only source available for scanning so I hope a fiche scanner out there is willing to take those still needed off of Eric's hands.

I'm bumping this really, really old thread to see if anyone still has any of the old Bails reels. I just bought some last week and think I've figured out a way to scan them through my film scanner without chopping them up.

I got outbid on a few and the person who won isn't responding to my request to rent them from him, so I'll just send a line out and see if anyone here can help.

I bought mine to scan some non-PD stuff, but I can post a list of the other titles and see if there's any interest. I know I've got Detective Eye 1, which hasn't been scanned AFAIK.

I've got one reel and would be glad to lend it if you have a way to scan it.

Pmack, if you have the way, the time, and the interest, I'd be glad to lend you my reels as well.
