Capt. Billy's Whiz-Bang
« on: July 14, 2010, 01:36:48 PM »
I just found the copy of Capt. Billy's Whiz-Bang Winter Annual from 1921-1922.  This is a 256 pg. Digest, all text.  But still of interest to comic collectors as an early Fawcett publication.  I would be more than happy to scan the book.  However, scanning it would more or less involve taking it apart.  I don't mind that- I think preserving and sharing the material is worthwhile.  I want to know if anybody WANTS it before I go ahead and take that step, though.  So, would anybody be interested if I scanned this?

I'd certainly want to give it a look, but I also only know the magazine by name and have no idea what it carried, so I might not be the target demographic.  Still, it's a nice find.  I was under the impression that very few people had seen them at all.

Well, it was fairly successful in its time; even if the Music Man reference is an anachronism.  I don't think it's that rare, but it's not that common either.

It's mostly badly dated and incorrect jokes.  I doubt many people would ENJOY it, at least on its own terms.  But that's totally different from people finding it interesting or worthwhile as an artifact.

I'll put you down as a pro-scan vote, in any case.

I know Darwination would certainly like a copy.  He's scanned an amazing variety of Victorian era and on publications.

Most topical humor dates so badly that it's not even understandable to a later generation.  Believe it.

It would go in my scan pile if I had it, but it might keep slipping towards the bottom of that thing which seems to never get any shorter. (Thanks to JVJ   :-)

OK, it's going on the pile.  And it's pretty much the end of the pile, so this weekend I'll work up my next list from JVJ.  (And since my schedule is almost exactly reversed from normal people, by "weekend" I mean "around Tuesday".)  :P

Hi Eric,
Sounds good!  I don't know for sure anymore who is working on what other than Jon is doing Fiction House.  But I'm sure you'll request interesting books from JVJ for scanning.

I have all the missing or incomplete Wings issues (that Jim could supply) up through #85. That will leave us with only two missing (17 and 58, I think)

I'd love to see a scan---as much a fan I am of GA Comics, I'm always intrigued by even older publications that made their mark on the public [1920's film fan mags, fer instance].  Not only am a joke book collector, but I've been reading about CBWB for nearly 40 yrs without once glimpsing one.

I thought I saw a mock up in a movie recently--I want to say Titanic--I'm thinking in the wireless office--[and it would have been out of place, anyway]--but on freeze-frame it wasn't---though it did have two of the words in the title---Billy-Whiz...or Capt-Bang...something along those lines.  I wish I could remember the movie fer sure--may be or may be not Titanic.

Was it Black Stallion--when the ship was sinking?  Damn memory.

Yes, please, scan it, Eric!!!  I don't think I've ever come across one of the early annuals. I did scan a single early issue (kindly edited by McCoy) and blogged it here and have my eye out for more examples through the years (I'm pretty sure it didn't stay all text for too long):

http://darwinscans.blogspot.com/2009/08/capt-billys-whiz-bang-october-1921.html

If you can't tell from my post, I really do ENJOY this sort of thing  ;)  Yes, much of the humor is anachronistic and in a mode a bit foreign to the modern reader, but I find myself enjoying the language and much cheered after reading the old humor mags  :)

It's in mid-scan as we speak.  I was sick a couple weeks ago with the flu, of all things this time of year.  It's on the way, though, but it will probably be another week or so.  It's a big book!

Fresh scan alert!

Capt. Billy's Whiz Bang v05n57 (1924-03.Fawcett) (DPP)

http://i53.tinypic.com/2a5lyd.jpg

This one is a bit later issue than the last one I scanned.  Capt. Billy's added some spot illustrations and cartoons as well as a slick centerfold page with risque (for the day) photos of starlets.  Thanks to McCoy for a hand with the colors on the cover.
