Very nice for a first (?) scan. Keep this up and you may well set a new standard that others should strive for.

I agree with the others. Incredible scan of an excellent copy three quarters of a century old!

I bought several issues a year or more ago, which were marked as being in the public domain, but by the time I got around to doing this one (recently retired) only #4 and #81 are in the public domain :(

There are a bunch of Captain Marvel Adventures still in public domain. However, most of those have Steamboat in them. I know that at the time, that is the way things were, but I'm not comfortable restoring issues that have racial stereotypes. I have thought about doing so but changing Steamboat's name and removing the offensive dialect, but I am guessing that people here would not approve of that approach? It's too bad, because there are a lot of old stories that can't be shared in their original form anymore. I love these comics, which were before my time and whom I wasn't aware of until DC brought them back.

Let me know if anyone is interested in that approach. Otherwise, it may be difficult to find some Fawcett Marvels that DC doesn't claim ownership for. C.C. Beck grew up in Zumbrota, MN, which is near where I am. Fawcett was also founded in Minnesota. And Superman artists Curt Swan and Dan Jurgens are from here, too.

I meant to say in the post above that I would change Steamboat's appearance to one that would be consistent with how Beck or Constanza drew back then without the racial stereotyping.

Again, this would be something "new" and not a proper restoration, but it would be nice to see these stories be able to be shared with a younger generation. Some stories may have content that is bad enough that they still couldn't be used -- I have not looked into it that closely.

@clarkwonderful - I'm hesitant to answer your question, but my answer is no.  Seeing the character Steamboat 'cleaned up' to please modern audiences is just as bad as denying that there was anything wrong with this character in the first place.  I'd prefer that you scan the comics you have and share them as is, adding a note that the comic contains racist depictions that may offend people.  When scanners here at DCM shared issues of "Captain Billy's Whiz Bang" magazine they added a note saying something similar.  I'd like to see the issues of "Captain Marvel Adventures" containing the serial "The Monster Society of Evil" in better shape than the current scans.  "CMA" #26, pages 57 and 58 in particular, need an upgrade.  These pages are half paper, half fiche.  If you have this comic or any other comic with the "Monster Society" serial in it, then please share it.  Thank you.

@Crimson-Blue-Green thanks for your input. That was kind of what I was expecting people to say, but I hope others share their thoughts, too.

clarkwonderful, I think most of the readers of this site's content can handle seeing Steamboat as he was originally presented. No one will suspect you of endorsing racial stereotypes! Thanks for your fine work.
