I have several early 50's Classics Illustrateds, coloured, British, Thorpe & Porter( who seemed to do a lot of B&W reprints of American horror comics at the time) - are they legal and is there any interest?

They're not allowed, as far as anybody knows. I seem to recall some discussion that some of the Classic Comics- the precursor to Classics Illustrated- might not have been renewed, but it was decided that it wasn't worth opening up that particular can of worms.
If they had been allowed I would have loved to see them, though!

I have a pretty good stack of CI's sitting around. The later issues are dirt cheap

It appears the "guy in Canada" is Jack Lake Productions (in Toronto). Classic Comics Store Ltd. (in Newbury, Berkshire) is similarly republishing the Gilberton CI and Junior issues for the U. K., Ireland, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.
