Can anyone point me to some behind the scenes info on how Fox were colouring their comics at the time? The way that colour is used in this comic in a painterly/textural way blows my mind given the limitations of the four-colour reproduction process at the time.

Sorry I can't help there but Fox is one of the more notorious publishers for doing their books on the cheap and if you look at a few more you will find they are far from 'great' printing.
