Sugar & Spike Archives
« on: September 21, 2011, 01:57:54 AM »
I already have touched on this in another post, but I wanted to give it its own thread.

DC has finally released the first volume of Sugar & Spike Archives.  While there may be some complaints about the details- I would have been quite happy if the first volume actually had unpublished in the US stories, and a more affordable format so more kids might see it would have been nice- these are incidental.  This is one of the best collections of comics ever published.

For those of you not familiar with the series, Sugar & Spike are two young children, too young to talk to adults.  But all babies can speak baby talk, so they can understand one another just fine.  And on this simple but brilliant concept, one of the most delightful, charming, laugh-out-loud hilarious, and kindest comics ever created ran for thousands of pages thanks to Sheldon Mayer.  No blood, no guts, nothing a bright preschooler couldn't enjoy.  But almost every single story- and there are several in each issue until somewhere around #65 (I can't remember the cutoff)- makes me laugh out loud, literally.

I wish I had the words to describe this book properly; but I can't remotely do it justice.  I want to hand a copy to every single comic book reader alive; I can't.  But in my heart, I honestly feel the world is a brighter place now that at least some of this material is back in print and available again.  If you've never seen the material, go get the book, or ask for it at the library, or something.  If you've seen it, you're probably already tracking down your copy.

I couldn't agree with you more on how great this series is/was and I hope that this is just the start of a Mayer renaissance which sees the reprinting of the entirety of his comics work in various formats for people of any budget.

I too heartily recommend this collection!
And for those here that aren't familiar with Mayer's work check out Eric's file of
The Dell Scribbly Collection! (ver2) here -

A character equally worthy of high praise and reprinting!

Agreed. I've never read the material before and there were lot's of laugh out loud moments. I'm going to let my two girls read it (and keep a close eye on them so they don't fill out the "make your own story pages" or cut out the paper dolls).  ;D

Glad you liked it, Jedifish.  I'm so glad it's back in print; now if we can get some more collections.

I hope so. This has now become a line I'd be more than happy to support. Heck, I'd love to see it on an annual rotation.
