Spanish Civil War

Hi

I am looking for US comic stories dealing with Spanish Civil War. Is there any during the 1936-39 period or slightly aftrwards?

Although this isn't American (it's Spanish) you still might be interested.  Lots of propoganda and an interesting look at a political comic/magazine from 1937.

Well, in passing, SECRET ORIGINS #5 (1986) does mention in passing that Lee Travis, the future Crimson Avenger, fought in the Spanish Civil War, but not much attention is given to it.

I think that most wars in American comics before Pearl Harbor happened in imaginary countries, with some exeptions.
Specially in newspaper comic strips, as Hitler, Mussolini, and Franco, had a lot of support in the US until then, editors did not want to antagonise readers/advertisers, and complained even if the acent of the bad guys could be taken for german.
I think comic books started using the germans as bad guys earlier than the comic strips, with some editors/publishers taking a clear anti nazi stanze, but don't think that the spanish civil war was much mentioned, at least not as happening in Spain.

I know it is a difficult topic as soon as you go to short stories, or even further, to single quotations. I found two references in Captain Easy (1936-37), the beginning of Three Aces in Action Comics, one story (Bombs of destiny) in Funny Picture stories, one reference in Captain Terror in USA Comics, one reference in Cpt Battle Jr, one story in Spy Hunter. And later, Blackhawk, Wolverine, The Crimson Avenger, The Shadow... all involved in the Spanish Civil War.

As Nobby said, I think you'll find more pseudo-Spains than real ones.  If memory serves, the fictitious nation in Fox's Wonderman seemed more Spain than Italy or Germany to me.

And of course, the years of active fighting in Spain were an era when the comic book was still pretty embryonic.  By the time the industry was really in full swing so was Hitler, so the Spanish War was pretty quickly becoming a footnote.

Probably have more luck with strips than with comic books.
