Need help to convert books
« on: May 02, 2013, 02:51:17 PM »
Hi all. I have been having problems converting the past few days new downloads from "fett". I use Calibre and have for past 2 years as I find it simple and usually does the job. The only problem I have is I don't understand .RAR files. I convert cbr, cbz and zip no problem but the .RAR says an error and leaves me with a WinRAR to unzip to a folder and read pages in separate windows. I like that I can convert and read in a flowing pdf style and they don't take up as much room in a folder as a .RAR. Can someone please help me in as simple terms as possible please-oldster here and don't understand too many terms but working on it..LOL

If I understand your question correctly, it seems like all you should do is change the file's extension from .rar to .cbr, then convert the file to .pdf as you've been doing.

Right you are Max.
Netasha might have to turn on 'show file types' as well if she can't see them using right-mouse-click -> 'rename'.

I checked Fett's files.  They contain an '.sfv' file which I suppose might be the trouble.  If you are able to remove that file your converter might work.

Sorry guys but ...what??? ??? ???.  What I do when I see a comic I want to download is hit download button, save as, then complete the name of the comic (less dashes and dots) add this at the end after the # of the comic  -p (19).pdf.cbr or .cbz  or .zip and then save. ie- (##-pgs (date pub).pdf.one of the endings) It goes to a folder where I then just drag and drop it to the Calibre to change into pdf file and happy continuous reading.

Sorry but I don't understand where this "show file types" is or how to turn it on or where to turn on "file extensions" or what it means. (I'm still just learning comp stuff)

Hi Net,
All files on DCM are of two types each with two flavours.
They are either a .zip or .rar file.  Zip files can be called .cbz and Rar files called cbr.  This is so CDisplay can use them.
If you say you can extract the internal jpgs than you must have an archive app installed.

If you can see a file within Fett's uploads that ends with .sfv I think that is the problem file your Calibre app doesn't like.  Click on it and hit delete.  The rar file should then be able to be used inside Calibre.

Hope that helps,
-Yoc

Tks very much all of you for the help. I did as you said YOC (and I think that is what TheRealMaxFortune was trying to tell me too) when I saved as and renamed the comic I put .cbr in place of .rar and saved it to a file. Then when I dropped them into Calibre to convert into a pdf it worked!! I now have a pdf file I can read and not a WinRAR that I had to open and read each page in the preview pane. So that is what I will do from now on. When I have a comic that ends in sfv or .rar I will put the name + end it with .cbr or .cbz (or .zip if a win file). So simple once one does it a few times. (But I still like JVJ's downloads/uploads...lol). Tks again and (((((( CYBER HUGS )))). Cheers Net.  ;) :) ;D
