Mort Weisinger-era Superman stories. Which are the best?
« on: December 26, 2012, 12:10:20 PM »
I'm doing an intermittent series of posts on my blog about Superman comics when Mort Weisinger was editor. I was wondering if anyone had any opinions about which are the best and most entertaining stories from this era. Please be aware that I'm not above trolling for ideas for future posts if anyone suggests something interesting. My blog, though, is just for fun and not for profit.

Here's what I've posted so far:

ACTION COMICS
351 with Sha-Vam a character I liked at the time
340 this was the first time I saw the villain overloaded by the power of the hero. Frequently used but this was the first for me so memorable.
338-339 I really liked these future stories where plain water was Superman's weakness
292-3 I liked Super-horse
I was also fond of Bizarro stories
I really loved the Adult LSH stories. Some of my all time favorites.

I grew up with the Weisinger Superman/Superboy/Supergirl/Jimmy Olson/Lois Lane stories, partly because that was about all I could find in my town. They were so over-the-top that I would be hard pressed to nominate any particular ones as "the best", since in many ways the worst were the best, from a "this is so ridiculous it's hilarious" perspective. Among my favorites, though, were the stories premised on the dictum that everyone has a double somewhere on this earth. I seem to recall quite a few stories based on that gambit, with the coincidental meeting of Lois Lane with Clark Kent's double or vice versa, and so on. And let's not forget the endless permutations of Kryptonites. If you've already covered these in your blog, forgive me. I'll go check it out now...

I have talked a little about doubles--I did an entry on the bottle city of Krypton, where every single person close to Superman "just happens" to have a double. I love the stories from this era, but that is one plot device Weisinger definitely ran into the ground.

Thanks for the input.
