Fox's Thor: The Movie
« on: September 02, 2012, 08:57:38 AM »
I was playing around with iTunes movies and I stumbled upon this trailer:

Someone's made a super-hero movie, based on Fox's Thor character.  It looks totally cheese-tastic.  I'm sure that it was probably made in an attempt to cash in on the Marvel Thor movie.

I know there have been some threads where people have talked about creating new stories with these public domain characters; I was surprised to see a whole movie!

Not a bad trailer as those things go.  Nice fx and they got the 'voice' down pat.

Mockbusters like that are commonplace these days. A big studio will put out a theatrical film, then some low budget company will put out a direct to DVD immitation film to capitalize on the audience's confusion. Check out this trailer for "transmorphers", a mockbuster based on the recent transformers movies: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fp7PVK9l0U

Of course, the fundamental character of thor is inherantly public domain, so he's an easy character to reuse in almost any way you want.
What I find most interesting about that trailer is that their version of thor wears a costume which far more closely resembles that of iron man. I wonder if the fox comics character had such a costume, or if the people behind this movie are trying to include 2 avengers in one shot?

edit: I was looking up the company behind this film, and they have a lot of mockbusters under their belt. Take a look at this list: http://www.thefilmcatalogue.com/catalog/CompanyDetail.php?id=3127

They even have a rip on the avengers movie, with one of the characters seemingly  a cross between captain america & nick fury: http://www.thefilmcatalogue.com/catalog/FilmDetail.php?id=13487 edit 2: Apparently this one is actually based on a golden age/PD comic; "captain battle" from "silver streak comics".

They also have other films based on public domain heroes, like the blue beetle: http://www.thefilmcatalogue.com/catalog/FilmDetail.php?id=13488

edit 3:
I found a couple more of their films which are based on PD heroes;
http://www.thefilmcatalogue.com/catalog/FilmDetail.php?id=13330 based on the scarab
http://www.thefilmcatalogue.com/catalog/FilmDetail.php?id=13193 based on the black bat
