Princess of the Sea - Artist ID
hlock:
I was really impressed by the story "Princess of the Sea" in Weird Thrillers 3 and reprinted in Nightmare 13. I want to find more stories by the artist, but there is conflicting info from the GCD and stuff inside the archives available on this site. Here's the all the info:
GCD:
Weird Thrillers #3
Pencils:
Dan Barry ?
Inks:
Dan Barry ?; Frank Giacoia ?
Nightmare #13
Pencils:
Dan Barry
Inks:
Frank Giacoia
Weird Romance #1 (reprint)
Pencils:
Dan Barry; Sy Barry; Miyako Graham (art touch-up)
Inks:
Dan Barry; Sy Barry; Miyako Graham (art touch-up)
Inside Weird Thrillers 3 on index card it says Sy & Dan Barry & Giacoia.
Nightmare 13 scan says Bob Powell.
Does anyone know who the artist(s) is/are with any certainty?
NobbyNobbs:
Why not look up a few stories by Dan and Sy Barry to check, their artstyles usually are among the easy ones to recognise.
JVJ (RIP):
It's Dan and Sy Barry with (probably - denoted by being in pencil on the index card) inks by Frank Giacoia.
The "Miyako Graham" credit applies only to touch-ups for the reprint.

ps. you won't find too many other Dan and/or Sy Barry stories of this quality simply because no one was paying as much as Ziff-Davis did and EVERYONE in the business wanted a seat at the table. They did their best and then some. Alas, the profits weren't there and Ziff quickly sold out to St. John and stopped all their comics except G.I. Joe and certainly stopped paying top dollar.

JVJ, thank you for taking the time to answer, the ps is especially helpful.
Too bad though, I was hoping for at least 30 or 40 more stories with art equivalent to this story. I found only 2 more stories listed on GCD by Sy and/or Dan Barry in Ziff-Davis comics. I glanced at them and they don't give me that same buzz that this one does. I'm planning to checkout other Ziff-Davis stuff looking for some other hidden gems.
The art in "Princess of the Sea" seems very Alex Raymond-like to me. I even quickly perused his Flash Gordon Sundays looking for swipes. Didn't find any.
Again thanks for the help.
NobbyNobbs:
A Dan Barry story looking like Flash Gordon, who would have guessed that :o
edit:
Sorry for the silly answer, but being scandinavian, where The Phantom is "the" superhero, the fact that Sy Barry worked as his brothers asistant on Flash Gordon before taking over as the artist on the Phantom is something everybody interested in comics know, while few are able to name any other Flash Gordon artist.
