Title: derekwc presents: History of Comics On Film
Post by: pervysage on July 31, 2010, 10:45:34 AM
Hey all. I posted a link to my site once in a comic-related blog thread here and JVJ was kind enough to help me out when working on Tex Granger.

Anyway simple version is that I was mainly inspired by James Rolfe and his Monster Madness Cinemasscre Reviews (also the Godzilla ones are pretty fun too!). I wanted to focus mainly on comic books adapted into tv shows and films. Kind of short synopsis and review with some historical perspectives and tangents thrown in for fun. I realize that there is a vast amount of material to cover and I probably won't have access to all of it, but I thought I'd go ahead and give it a shot. There are plenty of classic Golden Age characters like Spy Smasher, Vigilante and Tex Granger who are covered. Hope you enjoy!

I'm up to #8 so far.
Not to be overly picky but I've noticed I've had to turn my volume down a touch for your voice overs and then the odd clip can sometimes be hard to hear.
Is there a 'normalize' feature for the overall volume of your editing software?  Just a thought.

Keep up the good work!
:)

The first 16 or so were made using the software I had at the time (which was Windows Movie Maker).

Over the course of the project I branched out using other software such as Camtasia Studio and eventually Adobe Premiere. Also my recordings went from a logitech usb mic, to be edited in Goldwave, and eventually I just ended up using the onboard mic in my Canon XL-1 (which I prefer and will continue to utilize). Finding the right balance for the audio has been a learning experience, which I feel I got better at as time went by.

Let me know what you think when you get to the later episodes in the late 20s and 30s.

Edit: I just remembered, the .5 episodes were also made rather recently so you might see a noticeable difference when you get to those.

Hey PS,
Someone has produced an amazing fake trailer for a '1952' Avengers movie using a lot of the same clips you've featured in your history films.  (note I'm not accusing anyone of anything here)

I think People will enjoy this that have been watching your series -

Megamind/My Top Ten Favorite Non-Superman Supermen

So I took my mom out for her birthday today and me and my family all went to go see Megamind in IMAX 3-D.

As a fan of Superman I enjoyed seeing a twist on the mythos and particularly liked the culmination of the "shuul" gag with Megamind feeling all "mel-len-co-lee."

Anyway here's a little  write-up (http://hocof.blogspot.com/2010/11/my-favorite-top-ten-non-superman.html) that the movie inspired me to do.

Enjoyed this one, as always.  But if you're going to tackle radio heroes who later appeared in comics and film, why not the Shadow?

I think I would like to tackle other pulp or comic strip heroes, but more like how this was done as a side project and not part of my "official" project time line.

History of the Shadow or Phantom maybe someday.

RE: Atop The Fourth Wall's Cry For Justice Review - A Video Response In Two Parts

The last couple of weeks I've been watching Atop The Fourth Wall's video reviews on the comic book series Cry For Justice.

I was compelled to create my own video to serve as a counterpoint to many of the criticisms and arguments brought up in Linkara's aforementioned review.

So I contacted the man to inform him of my intentions, and with his blessing
I present his series of reviews alongside my own respsonse. (http://hocof.blogspot.com/2011/01/re-atop-fourth-walls-cry-for-justice.html)

Working on the next one now darkmark. The multi-season tv series take me a little longer. I've watched 2 out of 3 seasons of Wonder Woman.
The script is getting close to completion, but I would like to finishing watching season 3 and do some fact confirmation of some things.

Hopefully sometime this month the new part will be out.

That was a nice episode on the American Spider-Man TV series.  Now, tell me, are you planning to do a feature on the Japanese Spider-Man TV series?

Thanks glammazon!

It's coming up pretty soon. There will be about 4 more reviews and then Supaidaman!

Here, then let me tell you and the others what I know of the Japanese Spider-Man series so that you can use that knowledge in your upcoming installment:  The Japanese series came about as the result of a deal with Marvel Comics that allowed that particular studio to use the Marvel Comics characters (they did another series loosely based on Captain America) for a period of several years.  The costume used for the Japanese series was basically identical to that of its American counterpart, but because the company producing the series wanted to see a giant robot in it, the origin of Spider-Man as presented in that series was very different:  Peter Parker was given his powers by an alien prince who was the sole survivor of a planet that had been destroyed by his people's enemies - the same villains against whom Spider-Man faced off during the course of the series.  The robot itself originally belonged to said prince and could transform into a spaceship.  Weird as this origin may seem, the show was a hit in Japan and reinvigorated the giant mecha genre there.  Now, if I could only remember - or, should I say visualize, for I have the ability to relive past events as though I was experiencing then - the name of that particular studio! 8)

History Of Comics On Film Part 58 (Super Friends 1978) (http://blip.tv/history-of-comics-on-film/history-of-comics-on-film-part-58-super-friends-1978-6503878)

Pretty much this is the same show, but the two half hours had enough different material I felt justified into making it into two separate videos like those Filmation ones from earlier.

Feedback and thoughts are appreciated.

I should like to tell you what I know of the movie The Legend of the Lone Ranger. It was made in 1981 and the producer was the same man who did the TV series, Jack Wrather.  Two young men made their acting debut in the film; the Lone Ranger was portrayed by Klinton Spillsbury, though his voice was dubbed by James Keach, the brother of the actor Stacy Keach.  Tonto was portrayed by Jake Twelvetrees, and this time he spoke in perfect English instead of his usual pidgin.  Why Spillsbury was dubbed, I don't know - perhaps his accent was wrong for the part.  The movie involves Butch Cavendish's plot to kidnap President Grant, which the Lone Ranger naturally thwarts.  John Hart, who played the Lone Ranger for a season, is back as the girl's father, and Butch Cavendish is portrayed by Christopher Lloyd.  The movie is available on YouTube in a widescreen version and has been for quite some time - I've seen the whole thing myself.

I wish I could say things are happier here in Port Dover, but Mom is in hospital recovering from a brain injury sustained in a fall.  Dad and I go to the Norfolk General to see her every day, and she is coming along beautifully; we return to Ottawa in September, hopefully.

I was just thinking of the movie SWAMP THING, featuring Ray Wise as Alec Holland and Dick Durock as his alter ego, the Swamp Thing.  This unusual casting came about because Durock was unable to double for Wise as intended.  Wise did provide the dialog for the Swamp Thing and after this film was released, Durock became the man to play the part of the Swamp Thing.
