I've always found in interesting how any two artists can visualize and draw the same scenes totally differently. I also enjoy seeing today's contemporary artists drawing the heroes of the Golden Age. In that spirit, I decided to do the Heroes Redrawn Project. Basically, I give a present-day artist a page or pages from a Golden, Silver, or Bronze Age comic and ask that artist to revisualize and redraw the same scenes. It not only presents an opportunity to contrast two artistic visions side-by-side, but it also shows how comics of the past might look if published today.
First up, from the pages of Blazing Comics: The Green Turtle! I took two pages as drawn by the character's creator, Chu F. Hing, and commissioned Yvel Guichet to give his own reinterpretation. Yvel is the veteran artist of DC's Aquaman and Stormwatch, among many other credits. I think both artists did a superb job. Check it out.

Nice idea.
However, if there is a link to your re-drawn page, I do not see it.
-
Whoops, ran into some technical difficulties. Working on it....

Sounds great!
Please do share a link to these D.

Very nice work and a great idea for a commission theme too.
I'm not sure how I feel about seeing GT's face so much but still some nice work there.
:)

Actually, I instructed the artist NOT to do the face obstruction thing. As I understand it, that was Hing's way of hiding the fact that the character was Asian from his editor since he didn't think the editor would approve. If that's true, it strikes me as sad and unfortunate and I didn't want to perpetuate that.
-
Right, it's a pretty well known story and I could see you going either way with the commission.
Thanks again for sharing these!
-
Thanks, Yoc! And speaking of the Green Turtle, here's a commission of him as drawn by veteran DC artist Darryl Banks. Not a Heroes Redrawn piece, but kinda cool just the same.
-
Yep, nice one. GT has gotten more attention the last little while than ever. Google shows up some stuff you might enjoy.

The Golden Agents! A team of superheroes from the WW II era consisting of characters I first discovered right here at the DCM. Dynamically rendered by Mike Bowden! Clockwise from the top: Speed Centaur, the Bouncer, the Bronze Terror, the Toreador, Zippo, Steel Fist and the Green Turtle.
-
Wow, very, very snazzy work there!
Thanks for sharing these D. Keep'em coming if you got more.
Love it!

Here's Dagar the Desert Hawk. Pencils by Nick Choles and inks by Bob Almond. Another character I first learned about right here at the DCM!
-
Hehe, another fun choice, nicely done too.
Thanks D!
-
The Bouncer by Scott McDaniel (pencils) and Bob Almond (inks).
-
Ohh, nice use of the title there!
-
Here's Zippo, the wheeled wonder, as penciled by Scott McDaniel and inked by Bob Almond.
-
Another great one with the logo. These guys are good!
Thanks for sharing them D. :)
-
Another cool character: The Bronze Terror! Dynamically drawn by the great Darryl Banks
-
Mr Banks has done a few for Royg as well. A very good artist.
Nice job on this latest one.

Thanks for the kind comments, Yoc. Darryl Banks and Scott McDaniel have done most of the Golden Age commissions I have, but I'm bringing other artists on board as soon as I can get around to it. :)
-
i am really enjoying these commissions. keep them coming, i love seeing modern takes on vintage ideas!
-
Much appreciated, Twiztor! Here's the Black Terror -- no relation to the Bronze Terror -- as drawn by the late Fran Matera.
-
One of the more interesting Golden Age heroes I discovered here: Speed Centaur! Pencils by Scott McDaniel and inks by Bob Almond
-
Very nice! I really enjoy the extra work put into the logo work.
:)
-
This is my favorite Golden Age character commission. Scott McDaniel and Bob Almond outdid themselves presenting the cross-dressing crimefighter -- Madam Fatal!
-
Wow, that one IS a wonderful job on one of the most odd-ball characters ever!
Bravo!
-
Love this thread

Me too, me too!
Hey DamonO, would it be Ok to use that Madam Fatal drawing for a cover to a future archive on DCM?
No problem if you'd rather not.
Take care,
