Title: Wonder Man Sued Out Of Existance?
Post by: Rocket Riley on September 09, 2016, 09:33:32 PM
I have heard the story that DC sued Fox over Wonder Man for better than fifty years, but is it true?  Has anyone seen any proof it really happened?  Knowing how comics are produced the second issue would be at the printer by the time the first issue was on the stands.  In fact I suspect that the title was changed from Wonder to Wonderworld with the third issue because Thrilling Publications already had a lock on that title and let Fox know about it. The only comment I've ever read by Wil Eisner about Wonder Man is that he thought it was the worst thing he ever did.  Anyway if someone has more information I'd love to hear about it.

Oh it happened all right, but not the way Eisner would tell it later in life in his The Dreamer graphic novel, which if you haven't read it is a great book despite the bending of truths.
I covered the DC vs Fox case in the Phantom Lady Archives V2 - Fox Years in the Archives section.  There are links in there to the actual court transcript which I quote in my feature there.
A second story was started - a page of it is somewhere on the net.  I didn't think it was nearly as bad as I guess Eisner does but he did have all the baggage that went with it.

Happy reading!

Thanks I'll look forward to reading all about the case.

the way i've always figured is that issue #2 was done, including a Wonder Man story, but due to the (pending?) legal case, that story got pulled and it never saw the light of day (except for that one page that Yoc mentioned). I'm a huge fan of the Wonder Man concept and would absolutely LOVE to read the unpublished #2, but don't think it will ever turn up.

If it hasn't shown by now I doubt it ever will but who knows?

yeah, i'm not holding my breath or anything, but there's no harm in keeping the dream alive.
