Title: Q-Comics Preservation Project and web link!!!
Post by: bminor on September 01, 2015, 02:27:11 PM
Has anyone else heard of this project? I just stumbled upon it just a few minutes ago.
http://q-comics.com

They are acquiring key issues of comics books are are in extremely low grade, taking them apart, laminating them in mylar, then binding them in a wooden binder. When finished this project will donate them to the Library of Congress on the condition that anyone can go in and read them!!
Here is a blurb from the web site explaining it all:
The Q-Collection: Comic books are one of the five folk arts that originated in the USA and have spread throughout the world. The Q-Collection Comic Book Preservation Project was created to rescue and preserve key* comic books published from the 1930's to the 1960's. Preservation is necessary due to the poor quality paper that these books were printed on. The Q-Collection preservation method is to take low-grade copies of key comics, replace missing parts if necessary, laminate each page and pair related comics where possible. We then put 2, 3 or 4 comics in each binder and add histories of each comic book. For fun we've put comic book-related bonuses between each comic book. These bonuses are often very rare and help preserve the cultural history of that gold or silver age period.
Interesting!

Hi B,
Yes, I learned of them via a link mentioned in a DCM Facebook comment.  Beyond what they say on their site I know nothing.
They've never reached out to us.

I don't see that putting the comic pages into mylar is going to save them.  Yes tehy won't deteriorate as fast as if they're kept in a cardboard box, but they will deteriorate.  And I'm not sure using wood for the binders is a good idea.  either.

I listened a a 10 minute radio interview this fella (John Sindall) gave on Wisconsin Public Radio. In it he tells the tale of a very rare comic, New York World Fair that he had purchased, in was in extremely poor condition, really bad. He sent it to a professional comic book restorer to have to restore. The restorer got back to him and said it was so bad that he could do absolutely nothing to the comic book, it was beyond saving. This was a professional speaking. He said to just put it in a drawer and forget about it!

John has developed a process to encase in mylar laminate each individual page of a crumbling comic.

He literally bonds the mylar sheets to the newsprint, preserving the book from further certain destruction.

It will be nice to have all these key books at the Smithsonian for everyone to enjoy for hundreds and hundreds of years to come!

Somehow I'm friends with the founder of this project on fb.

Posts are updated many times during the week, and they have many many many sweet books in their collection.

Boox, great to hear from you!
Hey, if you would like to broach the subject of scanning for sharing some of their books that would be very appreciated.
They would get full credit of course.

Try not to be a stranger!

Thanks B!
I strongly believe John's Q Project and DCM share many of the same goals.
I'd love to work with him to bring some of his books safe for sharing to the site.
