Title: Possible writer credit clue
Post by: WiscPackRat on August 10, 2014, 01:29:24 PM
In getting some material ready for sale on eBay, I noticed something of interest.

In examining the original art to the Gale Allen story that appeared in PLANET COMICS #37, I saw this. In the border is noted: "Jeanne's byline? - by Douglass McKee" I wonder if this means that story was written by someone whose first name was Jeanne? It appears that somebody noted there a question about "Jeanne's byline" and then a different hand wrote in "by Douglas McKee?" I know it is very rare to know who wrote something at Fiction House at this time, with the standard "house names" usually being credited with the job.

Any comments?

Hmm.  One could also read it like someone asking Jeanie a queston -
'Jeanie, what is the by line?'

Looking at the notation, it is clipped on the right by the logo that was pasted and whited in place. But examining it with a light behind, the line that says "Jeanne" could be J
"Jeanne:" or could be "Jeanne's" and it is hard to tell what is on the end of it.

"Jeanne" is in standard pencil, "byline?" is in blue pencil, and "by Douglas McKee" is in regular pencil in a different hand, printed out rather that the script of the other lines.

I think it could very well be the first production person putting "byline?" before passing it back to the editor. But I am confused why "Jeanne: byline?" would be done half in one pencil, half in another.

Maybe it read "Jeanne: Logo here" or something like that. Then Jeanne wrote back "Byline?"

I don't think that's the case. I held the art up to a lamp and under the whiteout and the logo pasteup I see no sign of the "Jeanne:" or "Jeanne's" being followed by anything else.

Something springs to my mind.
Maybe "Jeanne" is an office worker and is reminded here to insert the byline to the Gale Allen strip.
Isn't the byline "and her Girl Squadron"?
Which seems yet to be missing from the printing plate?
Just speculating...

No, the byline would be the name of the alleged creator 'Douglass McKee'.
