Title: Barnaclepress.com strips
Post by: Yoc on April 27, 2014, 06:08:24 PM
Hi gang,
Today a member has been sharing some fun classic newspaper strips.  Some of them are very likely from http://www.barnaclepress.com/.
I've asked the DCM member what his source is but I haven't heard back from him.

I've looked but don't see what their rules are about sharing scans from their impressive collection.

Anyone know more about this publisher?

Anything before 1922 is OK now matter what. The others stuff needs to be checked but if not from a few of the big syndicates they are probably OK. It is OK to reprint reprints of PD material without the reprinter's permissions.

True enough Narf but I do not feel it's right to do so without knowing Barnacle is Ok with this.
Just trying to be civil with a site that obviously shares some of the same beliefs as we do.

Since I love newspaper strips I'll mention this....  The Library of Congress has tons of public domain scanned newspapers online here: http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/newspapers/ (http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/newspapers/).  I've spent many a night picking a random paper in a random city in a random month and year to see what strips it had.  I've added many from that site to my digital collection and share them all on DC++.  Strips back then weren't published like they are now.  The vast majority only lasted a few months to only a few years.  It wasn't like today where a strip like "Katzenjammer Kids" is still active since the late 1800s!!!

Anyway, the papers can be viewed at fullscreen so the strips can be copied via PS or GIMP and made into whatever image format you want and saved for distribution.  Everything there is PD with the obvious exception of things that have had their copyright renewed.

Barnaclepress has given their permission to share some of their files.
Check the Classic Newspaper Strips section to see them.

Sorry gang, it appears the BUF strips are not safe to DCM and have been removed.
