Post by: KaineZ on July 21, 2013, 04:32:22 PM: Hi guys! I just registered with the site today and I've got quite a back load of public domain comics to scan for you that don't appear to have already been scanned.

I just uploaded Famous Funnies 46 (minus Buck Rogers). I've also got the complete issue no. 99 scanned as well that I'll upload after I make sure issue 46 works. It looks like the issue 99 posted here is only for the Fearless Flint pages.

After that I've still got another 7 or 8 Famous Funnies on hand that have not been scanned, but those will have to wait until next weekend when I return from a business trip.

I've got plenty of horror and scifi that I'll check to see if it needs posting as well, but here lately I've been digging on Famous Funnies so I might stick with that for a while. My brother has quite a stash that I can dig through for more!

It's always great when a new scanner shows up!
We've got a topic here 'COMICS STILL NEEDED FOR SCANNING' that lists what is missing or incomplete on the site that movielover keeps updated - http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/forum/index.php/topic,4081.0.html It might help you figure out what is needed for the site a little easier. But I'd suggest to Always check on the site before starting a new scan.

Btw, if you find yourself looking at a scan and you know your copy is in better shape or superior printing don't hesitate to do a new scan. We have no rules against alternate or different versions of the same book.

Scanned at 150dpi, saved at 10/12 quality in Photoshop. Apparently this issue is one of the first comics (maybe the first?) to show a parachute on the cover. Cover date is August 1944.

Sounds like a big relief for my purse...
It would be fabulous if you could make a list of your horror books - so I can concentrate on (still) missing issues!

I didn't do an exhaustive search though so there could be some horror that I have. Admittedly though virtually everything is EC so there wouldn't be much I could post anyway.

There's no rule against more than one scan per a book. If your copy is better than ours Please Do scan it someday.

You can make counter offers on everything there (unlike eBay) and they have a MUCH wider selection of comics in various conditions depending on what you can afford.

Speaking of missing pages....I just finished scanning Famous Funnies #66 tonight and noticed it had 2 pages torn out. They just happen to be the Buck Rogers pages so for the purposes here no big loss I guess....

I would have used yellow instead of orange, but it was so bright I temporarily lost sight in my left eye so I changed it.

This is one of the first American comic books ever published. Issue #1 was the first so perhaps this was 4th ever published (way back in 1934). I'm proud to own a piece of history even if it's coverless! That was the only way I could afford it, but I'm hoping to get more early issues in the near future. The ones after issue #5 don't hit the pocketbook quite so hard.

The existing issue was a GM scan. My scans are of better quality as well as obviously not having the watermark. I called it an upgrade in the upload, but I guess it could be a diff ver. For future reference someone let me know if I should use "upgrade" or "diff ver" in the future. I have some other GM scan upgrades that I'll get to eventually.

The gang was right - as these are completely different scans I renamed your new version 'diff ver' and as the GM scan was no longer needed in that section I moved it to 'Placeholder scans' with other GM books that have been replaced with better, non-watermarked scans.

If someone adds pages or fixes rips, updates the cover with a better version, that kind of thing - then we mark them as -upgrade.

Stay tuned, there might be a lot of upgrades down the road from LOC material.

Even after a trip to the Library of Congress there are still books needing fills, namely Jungle 34,93,101,149, and Jumbo 52,53,55,97,142,151. Maybe you have some of these?

I was aware of the Fiction House focus, but unfortunately I don't think I have any from that publisher that needs to be scanned. I've looked at the "What needs to be scanned" list that movielover keeps to see if there are any that I might have in my collection, but it doesn't look like it. There were several Jumbo Comics covers that I always liked and that #145 was one of them so when I was buying a number of other books recently I saw that one and had to add it to my collection! I'd like to help out on some of the Planet Comics that are only available in fiche, but those are some pricey books, or at least the ones that are needed anyway. I've recently gotten back into buying golden age books so I'm going to more shows than I used to. I keep several lists on my phone for comics that are needed to be scanned and if I see a Fiction House for sale that isn't too expensive I'll pick it up, but I kind of hate to step into it not know if someone else already has it from LOC and the scans are just waiting on editing.

I know it was called this but for organization sake only, the file listing has been changed to match the others.
But rest easy - when the file is downloaded it will still be 'Boy Issustories'.

Sorry, I know this doesn't make sense in some ways but to rename all of them on the site would be a big job!

So there would be no harm if all the later issues were called Boy Illustories. Hover I believe a lot of them were already called Boy Comics. And since I scanned at least some of those, it's as much my fault as anyone's I guess.

Of course I do believe that GCD goes overboard the other way in making sure the title is exactly right.

I've never seen issue #4 anywhere. Those were the only two issues and as you probably know the first 3 issues were actually called Funny Tunes which I didn't know until yesterday. I've got a couple of comics shows to go to over the next couple of months and I already have them on my lookout list.

Jet Powers #004

This is to replace the existing scan which is a little small. I'm a big Al Williamson fan so I've had this book a while. I spent a little more time than normal on the Space Ace story that Al did trying to get the colors looking as nice as possible with a background as white as I could get it without washing out the other colors. As I was processing those pages I noticed how much the main character of the Williamson story looked like the Flash Gordon that he would later draw in the 1960s (more than 10 years later!). Mac Raboy was doing the Flash Sundays at the time this Jet Powers story was done and his Flash did not have the same head gear as Space Ace does in the Jet Powers book. Al obviously liked this look and saved it for his boyhood hero when he later drew Flash Gordon.

This is my first attempt using a digital camera. I'm not entirely satisfied with the result here, but I think it's good enough for release. I bought a new camera Saturday with more than twice the resolution so I expect results in the future to turn out crisper. I took these images outside on a cloudy day which should have provided the best lighting, but there was a wee mistake I made that I now know how to correct for.

I reviewed a lot of the 12 books I photographed yesterday and the quality is miles better than the FF 75. I can't tell the difference on most of the pages.

Luckily not all my work was wasted since his copy was missing the centerfold. So, I just upgraded his with this missing pages and gave it an improved cover scan.

I do not like the zip format because rar always provides, for me, the best compression and I don't have "zip" clients on my computer. Winzip is bloatware, the native Windows client is crap and I hate 7zip. The last time I preferred the zip format was sometime in the mid-90s when pkzip was popular.

There's a detailed reason for Real Life Comics 14 on the dl page for that book, but basically it has a story about a ship that my grandfather was on during WW2. I've had this comic longer than any other in my collection. My grandmother bought it as soon as it hit the stands in 1943 and put it in a scrap book that she kept during the war containing all kinds of ephemera that covered the experiences of my grandfather and her brothers in the US Navy.

My father was a CB in WWII and my Father-in-law landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day. Neither would talk about their tours but I have always been proud of them. Something good from Charlton Comics to keep the memories alive. Much appreciated.

Famous Funnies #117 (no BR)

Almost every other release I've done for DCM has been a Famous Funnies for almost a year so it's somewhat of a relief to finally move on to other comics. I believe issue #35 is in the works by someone else so that just leaves 6 completely missing issues and a few that are missing more than a few pages and several that might be missing only parts of the outer wrap. If I can find issues #81 or 82 I'll pick them up, but I'm going to leave the others to someone else to scan.

Coming up next: a few Fawcett scans starting with Captain Marvel Adventures #30.
