Title: Artist in Dell Funnies
Post by: RustlingsTim on November 28, 2012, 05:53:20 PM
Can anyone tell me anything about the artist who did "The adventures of 'spargus and Chubby" ?
i assumed it was a newspaper comic but it's not listed in Holtz's American Newspaper Comics.
The art is quite distinctive and. assured and I would have thought recognisable - but GCD has nothing and a quick google search didn't pick up anything.
Any ideas?

thanks, tim

There are a lot of distinctive artists that we have no idea who they were :'( Maybe someone will know this artist.

Not me, narf.
No idea. Pretty early and pretty crude. Sorry.

I would guess that it was not a newspaper comic as there doesn't seem to be any copyright notice by any syndicate on it.

Either a failed submission to a newspaper or an original made to look like a newspaper strip.

Thanks guys. Still fascinates me. The title can't decide whether it's 'Spargus or (.seems more likely) 'Sparagus from one issue to the next. I like the little signs everywhere (whar Elder called chicken fat) and the mad professor in his lab coat / cloak that sweeps the floor reminds of some other image from somewhere.
I'll just keep looking for something similar in other early titles

IIRC Max Gaines and Sheldon Mayer were working on the book at this time. Does anyone know if they ever named any cartoonists they worked with then?
