Hi All,
I'm a big fan of the site and think it is a real treasure; always discover something interesting and new each time I visit. It's astonishing just how many comics were produced mid-century and how many still likely remain to be scanned and uploaded here. Thinking about investing in a tablet to read these great four-color artifacts, but waiting for an Android tablet with as good a resolution as the latest iPad at a lower price. (If anyone has recommendations in this regard, I'm open to them).
I'm a 3D artist and recently I digitally sculpted a character featured on this site; had a 3D print of it made and it turned out great. Will post more details about it in the near future!
Best Regards,
Jared Zichek

I have heard that a Toshiba Thrive running Android 4.0 is excellent. It's thicker but has those extra connections people like to have.
-
Thanks Bodryn, that's a good tablet tip - hopefully the wife will get me one for Christmas!

This is an amazing site for Very Detailed tablet reviews -

Welcome from another Californian. I am in the Sothern part in the OC. Garden Grove to be exact. How about you?

Hi Richard! I'm in La Jolla. I've seen your name on many sites as an authority on Golden Age characters. I'm trying to launch a small figurine collection dedicated to Golden Age public domain characters (you can see the Kickstarter for the first figure, Stardust the Super Wizard, at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/441047786/fletcher-hanks-stardust-the-super-wizard-figurine (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/441047786/fletcher-hanks-stardust-the-super-wizard-figurine)) and would welcome an thoughts or suggestions about who the series should include.
-
Jared anything I can do to help I would be more than happy to. Are you going by publisher/company or just random characters or with a theme (Like weird characters or patriotic ones)? Let me know your thoughts.

Quite frankly I'm looking at any character that is fairly well known, visually interesting, enjoyable to sculpt, and doesn't present any obvious copyright/trademark problems. I hope to set up a survey on my site (jaredzichek.com) this evening and get a more scientific view of collectors' preferences. I would like the series to feature a mix of super hero, sci-fi, and horror characters, but that might turn off folks who only like one type of genre. There is also the key question of white metal vs. resin - I prefer the former, but it is more expensive primarily due to the lead content, which increases weight and shipping costs.
-
I could see a patriotic push to come out around the 4th doing well. Black Terror would be the most obvious along with Daredevil. Dynamite and others have made them more known now. That turns me off but I am not normal. I think the top superheroes from each company would be nice. Magno and Lightning from ACE for instance
-
A patriotic super hero every July - that's an interesting idea, narfstar! There certainly are a lot of them. Representing each company is another good idea. One thing I need to ask on my survey is about two-packs: for instance, whether people would like to purchase both the Black Terror and his sidekick Tim together, separately, or omit the sidekicks altogether. I think of the way that Bucky was derided for so many years and wonder if the disdain extends to all these sidekicks, or if they are thought of at all.
-
What could be more patriotic than The Flag?:

Nice choice Roygbiv666; I like most of the red-white-and-blue heroes, not out of any fervent nationalism (though I do love my country), but from a graphic design standpoint. It's a nice combination of colors.
However, as my handle suggests (BlazingSkullRocks), any character with a skull motif has my clear preference! If I could afford the Marvel license, Blazing Skull would be my top pick, and I would do every variant of him.
-
I hate non-powered sidekicks. However from a GA collector standpoint I think they would be cool, especially CAtman and Kitten.
-
Yes, some of the GA heroes are almost inseparable from their sidekicks, Catman and Kitten being a great example.
I think I found a good survey tool, will try to post a link to it tonight, hopefully get a clearer picture of what collectors would like to see in a collection of GA public domain characters
-
*thinking*
Hangman (MLJ) with a noose and scaffold in the background... oh, that could be cool!
-
I *totally* agree. That is one dark and cool comic. I want to eventually produce Swastika wielding a hatchet too - talk about an evil looking character!
-
Hangman and brother Comet would make sense but I bet almost nobody recalls Comet.
Swastika might get you in hot water with the P.C. police out there.
-
Comet - the first death of a major hero in comics, isn't it? And he stayed dead for quite a while, I think. Historically significant and probably worth considering.
I might put a disclaimer on the Swastika box - "This is not an endorsement/glorification of national socialism but a historically accurate representation of a vintage comics character from the 1940s." Something along those lines. Luftwaffe subjects are very popular in the scale modeling community, so I don't think it would raise much of a stir. The figures will be off limits to kids under 14, in any case.
I'd also like to do Captain Nippo too - there are two cool versions of the character I've seen - but that name is going to be problematic. Not sure a disclaimer would be enough.
-
And would Captain Nippo be decapitating someone? He was at his happiest with that axe of his.
;)
-
Not sure how villains would sell. Hero vs villain may be pretty cool
-
Yoc - Didn't Nippo have a hook he used to dispatch his victims? I've only seen a couple stories with him, so I don't know how he evolved over time. Anyway, I don't want to go too gory, not a big fan of it. I do like some of the weird creatures, ghouls, etc. I've seen in recent horror collections from Abrams and Fantagraphics though. Wolverton was good at making some ghastly looking monsters!
narfstar - That might be a good idea. As a tyke, I generally preferred the look of the villains (Skeletor, Cobra, Decepticons, etc.), so that may be why I like the GA ones. However, there doesn't seem to be a lot of interesting super villains, but many generic thugs, gangsters, etc.
-
The Claw would be one of the better known.
Iron Jaw also for Lev Gleason was fun but very obscure now.
-
Magno and Davey fight the clown, many times. These would make great figures

This sent me looking through some great Super-Mystery covers. I do not know why the revival of many GA superheroes has not included those from ACE. Magno is now very much forgotten, although he had a long cover run on Super-Mystery and Four-Favorites. Lighting, Captain Couragous and even Mr. Risk had their own comics but Magno had the most covers and some great cover artists. BTW: Lightning and Lightning Girl would make another great here/sidekick choice.
-
Narfstar, those are all great suggestions there. I agree, Magno, Davey and the Clown should definitely be included, should the series go forward. Do you know if the latter appeared before or after the Joker?
Last night I created a trading card as a reward for a $5 pledge for those who want to support the project but can't afford the figurine:
(http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8484/8205633991_da77af4668_z.jpg)At the high end, I've created a $750 pledge for the advanced collector - a custom sculpt of a single public domain character of your choice at 1/21 scale (must be a "normal" sized humanoid, not an oversized one like Stardust). You will receive a completely unique hand-painted resin 3D print with a certificate of authenticity. Please see the Kickstarter page for more information:

Will hopefully be able to finish the survey tonight and get that posted as well.
-
Pretty cool looking. I already pledged for a figure. Will a card come with the figure?
-
No, I don't think so. However, I have to have them printed in batches of 10, and any leftovers will be randomly distributed among those who have bought a figure. So you could get lucky!
-
I just finished writing up a survey to determine the level of interest in and content of a potential "Golden Age Comics Figurine Collection." If you have a moment, you may fill it out here (http://bit.ly/TQHa7N); it will only take a few minutes and help me in planning out the potential series.
-
where is the survey
-
Thanks for your interest! The survey is here (http://bit.ly/TQHa7N).
