Yes indeed, a great story.  But the book is better than this film version.  In fact, I think the T.V. version is more enjoyable than the film.  We saw this at the pictures when it came out and my wife and I were divided on it. Linda thought it was really well done, although she had doubts about a couple of scenes with gross images.   I had to look away a couple of times.  Some of the acting was superb - Oldman and Cumberbatch in particular - but there seemed dead spots with Alleline and Esterhase.  My only problem with Oldman was in his much revered silence.  I got to the point where I was frustrated and wanted to hear something even if only a grunt.  The character of Hayden in the T.V. serial was beautifully played and it wasn't easy to adjust to the Firth version but I got there and thought the was very good.

It was a mini-series that ran in 1979 and starred Alec Guinness as George Smiley (his one role between Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back).
He reprized the role of Smiley in a second mini-series, Smiley's People, in 1982.   BBC Productions that ran on PBS back in the day.

Both worth catching although as Paw said the books are even better.

Best
