Just Uploaded - Kilroys #20
October-November 1949; 52 pages; c2c; scanner undetermined.
I tried again to include a mirror. I uploaded it to the Internet Archives and added the URL to the Mirror URLs box and chose the name MIRROR in the Mirror Names box. Should I use the Download URL box instead? Hopefully it will work this time.
The mirror is at http://www.archive.org/details/Kilroys20 (http://www.archive.org/details/Kilroys20) for those who want to save DCM bandwidth.

Reminds me a good deal of the pulp, "Ranch Romances," which I am sure is not a coincidence.

What a strange series "Alex in Wonderland" is, to judge by the first episode. Interesting book, and one I don't remember ever seeing, hearing, or reading about previously.

SO MANY comics that are interesting and unseen...
SO LITTLE time...
SO MUCH effort necessary to scan a comic...
Sigh...

No Buck Rogers (pages 17-20)
Nice scans of an interesting anthology book. I always find it interesting to see which newspaper series were selected to be reprinted and try to imagine the politics behind the choices (I assume cost per page is a major consideration as well as what an editor thought would be a draw on a major draw on a cover). I didn't expect to see any pages featuring Okey Doakes in a 1939 comic, because I can remember reading his daily strip as late as 1958 or 1959 but almost never meet anyone who remembers the character and his cast. I'm glad you made this available.
-
I also find it interesting just how different the selection of strips is from just a few years later.
-
Thanks Cooper but the file is a cbz renamed to a cbr. It doesn't work in Preview this way.

Yep, I renamed the file to a zip and it opened right up. I'll be on the lookout for misnamed extensions from now on.
Thanks Geo for fixing that.

Here's a scan from 2003. It makes me wonder what the oldest scan on DCM actually is.

That's an interesting question Cooper.
Some of the older names I heard about that were already gone by the time I started collecting scans in 2000 were Bill Nolan, Marble River, Old Beard, Full Beard, FordPrefect and QuietRiot. But I couldn't tell you what years they were active. I'm betting Eric (SRCA1941) might know older being around a few years before I came along.
Here's a scan from 2003. It makes me wonder what the oldest scan on DCM actually is.
-
All familiar names to me, and probably among the oldest scanners who would be represented here. I started collecting scans around 1999. Scans of PD books didn't seem to be as common in the early days. Some DC, Quality and Fawcett were about the only things that I ever noticed on ABPC, but then again, my newsgroup access and following was spotty. Most of the really early scans I took were from Yahoo Clubs. Most of those were typically very low res., and I doubt any are here.
I used to keep track of scanners when I downloaded a book. Some other names I have (or remember), from ABPC, on my earliest CDs of comics (which I started burning around 2002 I think) are bumblebeeman(sp?), Mark Stratton, Scan Man, Brain Death, Billy Batson, CigarMan43, Old Wayne, Punkrat, Roy Raymond, misterjoel, Laszlo Jamf, teto7totoro, Mac Raygirl, Sgt. Mike, Doc Quantum, Hary Peters, Bob Hughes, King Faraday, ae660, Pmack, and phabox. That covers through around 2005, when I started downloading from GAC, and didn't feel the need to keep records of scanners anymore.
bumblebeeman (if I’m remembering the name correctly), and CigarMan were ones that I know I remember from the really early days. I think Brain Death and Punkrat were around pretty early too. Most of my earliest downloads have long been lost to hard drive crashes, but I don’t think I was keeping good records back then either. Marble River was the one I followed most closely, because he was posting scans I could use in All-Amazing Comics, and my other books (which is what I started keeping records of scanners for). Most others were posting DCs, Dells, or other things I couldn’t share, or thought I couldn’t share. As I said, it seems like it took a long time for the public domain material to start being posted in any great quantity.
-Eric

teto7totoro is my oldest and closet online friend who introduced me to all the great scanners out there.
I recall searching for anything GA and being thrilled to find a GA Capt. America reprint and going months before seeing another scan. Today they are showing up almost daily on DCM.

Interesting issue, particularly the "Cattle Kate" story. Emma Watson was one of the central figures in Wyoming's Johnson County Cattle War and I've to note that the Fox version of her story is a hoot. There is almost nothing in the "Cattle Kate" story that squares up with historical fact which probably comes as no shock to anyone familiar with golden age comics. I'm always amazed when I do see a "true crime" story from any of the glut of postwar crime comics that actually gets the details of any of the historical crimes/criminals right. Twisted history or not, as entertainment the issue certainly isn't bad.

BTW, if possible, could you convert an rar or cbr files you find to zip or cbz in the future?
We are trying to get away from rar/cbr files as much as we can. They will work and if necessary we do allow them but they are not preferred.
Thanks again for the uploads!
:)
-
There's an obvious problem with converting them. It would create multiple copies of the same scan. There would be the scanner's released version and the DCM version. Once multiple versions of the same scan are created, it makes it even more difficult to locate upgrades (like paper instead of fiche or rescans). It would change the cryptographic hash function (md5,sha1,tth,etc.) of the file and make it nearly impossible and extremely time consuming to check the integrity against the original.
I'm already in a gray area by upping scans to the site without asking for the scanner's permission (some I can't as they are undetermined or deceased) and even though it would be pretty simple to convert them, it would feel like I was taking too many liberties with someone else's efforts.
That being said, there is a place for converting. I plan on upping a Bumblebee-man scan and he likes (or liked) to put his tags out front, so when I repack it to move the tag page to the end, I'll be glad to use cbz. I have a few more cbzs I can go ahead and add next as well while I contemplate this dilemma.
-
It would change the cryptographic hash function (md5,sha1,tth,etc.) of the file and make it nearly impossible and extremely time consuming to check the integrity against the original.
I'm busy now, but give me a couple of months. I might have a solution for this. With all the "improved," "enhanced," "partial," and other breeds of scans have kept this on my mind for a while.
-
You make very valid points Cooper.
I make a point of changing the file name to reflect what version I have. ie fiche, fixed or upgrade for my own system.
Perhaps John has a plan we can all use.

Another oversight. I've been sitting on this one over a year and a half.
Next up - a 10+ year old fix.

Thanks for your help Cooper!

Just Uploaded: Top Notch Comics #11 (MLJ)
Same scan as before but sourced from an older set of jpegs before the ibc, bc became lost and page 22 became corrupt.

I guess go ahead and delete my upload of Super Duck #54 as Darkmark beat me to it. I saw the #73 in his list but not #54 and thought it was safe to upload.
-
Thanks again Cooper!
We really do appreciate all the work you do for us. ;D
DM was a busy beaver and uploaded quite a few. A couple were misnamed and had to be pulled down.
I made a new topic about 'found' books. Just a strong suggestion we check GCD to confirm things, especially if incomplete. Sometimes someone makes an educated guess and it's wrong. Our latest Punch might one day be such an example. Better to share it as 'nn' until it's confirmed than have two versions of 21 down the road should we be wrong or even worse - never get the real #21.
Take care,
-Yoc

In case anyone has ever wondered why I use undetermined instead of Unknown Scanner there once was a scanner that went by UnknownScanner (or TheUnknownScanner), I often wondered if he scanned with a paper bag over his head.

Right, I recall Unknown, he did a fair number of Fawcett's IIRC.
