Hey gang,
I just wanted to point out Fan777's latest scan, Jumbo 141, is a huge success.
He's been working very hard learning the ropes for scanning and made a big leap forward with this latest scan of his.
All while using a Dial-Up connection to boot! :o
So our thanks to Fan, a very nice job!
:)
-
Yes, a very nice job. :)
-
Good on him. Anyone who can work around dial-up has my respect anyway and the scans look great. I hope to see more scans from him.
-
Great Scan Enjoyed, Hope to see more!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D

Hello DCM Members,
Fan 777 here, Carl is my name. I'm 65 years old and have been collecting for over 50 years. Were it not for an unfortunate theft in the 80's I'd have a lot more to share. Most of the fiction house were taken.
I've come to realize how much work it is to put together a decent scan and I'm grateful for all the work that's been done by the members to build this archive.
I'll be submitting from my almost complete collection of Straight Arrow in the future. One more Jumbo coming. 153
You've got a tremendous resource in the JVJ collection, I'm looking forward to future scans especially Prize Comics Western with great Severin art.
I hope my next try at ftp works Thanks to Yoc for his patient guidance in lining me up.
Carl
-
Welcome to the forum Carl. :)
I'm sorry about your collection but I know you'll find a lot of what your lost here as scans. And we certainly enjoy adding your own scans to our every growing collection here on DCM.
Feel free to post on any topic. I'm sure the gang will make you feel welcome and help out when there might be a questions.

Carl now shows us a new title to DCM - Youthful's Redskin 005.
Thanks Carl!
-
Keep 'em coming, Carl! Would love to see more Straight Arrow and Prize Comics Western.
-
Seems like JVJ has the complete run of Prize Comics Western. Is anybody requesting the books to scan?

Cool! All that Severin art would be lovely to see.

Hi Fan,
BuilderBoy has started working on JVJ's Prize books but hasn't gotten any Prize Westerns yet. If you had any to scan please feel free. It might be a while before we get to JVJ's books.

If I recall correctly, and I might not, American Eagle was one of the Prize Western features. I'd love to see any of his adventures. I also like the Redskin book you poste, so I'd be delighted by anything in that vein.
-
Carl has sent a corrected page for his Frank Buck 03 scans.
He has also provided better scans for the damaged Sheena pages from Jumbo 130.
Both are now on the site incorporated into the download files by Geo.
Thanks guys!

Straight Arrow 18 now up from Fan!

Straight Arrow 18 now up from Fan!
Excellent. I enjoyed the previous issue of Straight Arrow which Carl posted. I'll have to read this one as well.

Jumbo 153 from Carl now up!

Jumbo 153 from Carl now up!
:)
Good looking scans for that issue of Jumbo.

Straight Arrow #20 is missing the 5th page of the Red Hawk story with the 4th page of the same story is repeated (image #24). I figured I'd put it here since I never know when someone comments on a download page so I assumed no one else does either. Hopefully someone can add the page since it's coming through dial-up, if fan777 can procure it, or I can if someone will approve the single page (I'm guessing Yoc). Thanks to everyone in advance (and now) for their efforts.
-
Thanks for spotting it CW. I'll let Fan know about it.
-Yoc
-
Will try and fix this bug
-
I know I'm a pain but can someone PM or post here a link to an image that fails the thumbnail script. Want to test the code with an image I know fails so can chase down the issue.
-
Gee, that'd be a while back Capt. Stay tuned.
-
the fixed file is now on the site.

Good. I've been enjoying the Red Hawk back-up feature more than the Straight Arrow stories (although those are also a cut above the western average). I'm sure it will be worth the wait, which really wasn't very long.

It was worth waiting half-a-day to read Straight Arrow #20 as a complete issue. I love the Red Hawk stories, so I'm delighted the duplicated page was taken care of so quickly. Great issue.
-
Then enjoy another issue Jon.
Now up SA #23! :)
-
I'm liking all these Straight Arrow uploads. And the last one, with the story of Straight Arrow being forced to choose between fighting on the side of whites or Indians, was memorable. Thanks, Fan.

Now up SA #23! :)
I've downloaded read that issue now, Yoc, and I did enjoy it. I've enjoyed all of the issues Carl has been kind enough to post and I've also read a couple of that have been in the archives for quite some time. I vaguely remember Straight Arrow as a radio program, and I likely saw copies of either Straight Arrow's own book or his appearances in "Best of the West," but I can't say they or the radio show made much of an impression on me when I was five, six, and seven years old, now I'm amazed at how good they are and I like the Red Hawk stories even a bit better.
-
I think Fan will be scanning more of them Jon so stay tuned.
:)
-
Thank you for another issue of Straight Arrow, this time #24.

Carl has rescanned one of his early shares improving on the resolution and editing.
CaveGirl #11 [A1#082]-rescan is now up. :)

Another new one from Fan777: Straight Arrow 027.
Thanks Fan and everyone else please enjoy the upload.
Geo

Indeed, thanks a bunch, Fan! (Anyone other than me remember the song "Straight Arrow" by the band Spirit from way back when?)

Indeed, thanks a bunch, Fan! (Anyone other than me remember the song "Straight Arrow" by the band Spirit from way back when?)
Yes, I remember that. Straight Arrow was also Rolling Stone magazine imprint on their books at right around the same time. I can remember members of our generation saying, "Great shot, Straight Arrow" sarcastically when someone would do something foolish or graceless, although not that many of them actually remembered that was the vocal introduction to each of the Straight Arrow radio programs.

The latest Straight Arrow #28 is now up and available for downloading.
Thanks Fan.

Thanks Carl!

I'm really enjoying all of the Straight Arrow books which Fan777 has added. I remembered the radio show from the waning days of radio but I seldom saw the comics then and attached no special significance to them (I was also in first and second grade), so I would not have realized what a great series (with a great backup feature) I had been missing until Fan brought it to my attention.
-
Yep, Fan has been doing a great job on the series and I look forward to seeing what he does after he finished it.
Thanks Fan!
:)
-
Delighted to see that Fan777 has posted "Prize Western Comics" #110. American Eagle is a fondly remembered part of my childhood and I was glad to see the issue contained three American Eagle stories by John Severin. Can't say I remembered the Lazo Kid and Pedro, however. This is the second issue of Prize Western which Fan has posted and I hope it won't be the last.
-
Hi Jon,
I told Fan there was an audience for these on the site. And it's always nice to know one's work is appreciated.
I believe he has more to come. :)
-
If you like Severin, you HAVE to get Squa Tront #11 from Fantagraphics:
http://www.fantagraphics.com/browse-shop/squa-tront-11.html (http://www.fantagraphics.com/browse-shop/squa-tront-11.html)
John Benson waited nearly 25 years to publish my interview with JS and to finally get my checklist of pre-1960 material into print (someone else documented the later stuff - so you can relax). Greatest phone conversation I ever had with anybody. It's condensed in the mag, but the flavor comes through.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
ps: scanners, I have a completer run of Prize Western...
-
Wow, that's a long wait!
Must have been a real thrill for you Jim.
-
Will the book be on sale in digital Jim? I am trying to get away from paper just no room.
-
It was published six years ago, narf,
you'll have to ask Fantagraphics what their plans are.
Room is DEFINITELY a problem!

I just purchased a copy of Straight Arrow #19 -- the lowest missing issue and will scan it ASAP (which means a week or so probably).
I noticed too late that JVJ has a copy of this as well as the missing #22. He also has 47 49 51 54, though fan777 might well have those as well as he seems to be proceeding in numerical. I just sent my two boxes off to Jim today and may pick ME as my next set. I'll have to see what else he has that is missing.

Glad to see Fan777 added two more issues of Straight Arrow and an issue of Prize Western. All three issues are great.

Glad to see Fan777 added two more issues of Straight Arrow and an issue of Prize Western. All three issues are great.
And Carl has added yet another issue of Straight Arrow and another great issue of Prize Western featuring American Eagle and the Lazo Kid. I enjoy seeing the collections of both titles grow.
-
Yep, Carl has quickly been making a name for himself among scanners.
Thanks for the latest Carl.
-
Fan has been very busy! :o
The following have been uploaded for your downloading pleasure:
Dead-Eye Western V1 9 c2c (Fixed the double upload on this title, removed it)
Jumbo 96 c2c (Re-scan)
Straight Arrow 55 c2c
Straight Arrow 54 c2c
Thank you Fan for all of them.

Wild Boy 012 c2c (paper)
Wambi 16 rescan c2c
Wambi 10 c2c (different copy)
Prize Comics Western 111 c2c
Been very busy by the looks of it, thanks again Carl for them.
Do you want me to take down the other Wambi 16 by the way?
Geo
-
A fixed now c2c version of
Wambi 16 (dupe page corrected)
is now up.
-
New from JVJ, rangerhouse and Carl -
Cat-Man Comics 025 (diff ver-c2c) -JVJ
Blue Beetle 029 -JVJ
Blue Beetle 028 -JVJ
Blue Beetle 026 -JVJ
-
Blue Beetle 026 has a page out of order (shows up at the end of the file). An 056 in front of the image file's name should do the trick.
Also does anyone know which 4 pages are missing from Blue Beetle 028?
Thanks
-
Thanks Cooper, ML has fixed the file.
Perhaps RH will know what is missing from the comic.
-
Straight Arrow 053 has just been uploaded by Fan777.
Thanks Fan.

I had never seen this title before and, after reading two issues, I decided it was a nice series. I'm a movie fan (among other things) so these appealed to me on several levels. I wouldn't mind seeing more of this series, if issues become available.

Blackhawk 049 paper thanks to Fan777 is now up.

Thank you for editing those Exciting Comics issues, Fan!
-
Many thanks for these scan uploads!
Re the Prize Comics Western #72 story that JVJ IDs as Severin-Elder, I'm not so sure. I can kind of see the possible Severin pencils underneath, but the inking strikes me as closer to Joe Maneely than to Elder. My hunch is that there are several hands at work in the art.

I have a couple of advantages over you, Poz. I showed this comic to John and discussed it with him. You may read his comments in Squa Tront #11. Plus I have experience that tells me that this is one of John's very first comic book stories and most likely Elder's, too. It's not likely they'd begin looking precisely as they would two years later. Maneely was still at Street & Smith when this was done and none of the three had yet worked for Timely, where Severin met Maneely.
If my notes are in ink, you can generally trust them. I do encourage challenges to any of my data, but feel pretty confident on this ID.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
