Title: Best DCM cover for a guitar?
Post by: rutmang on May 20, 2011, 05:02:05 PM
Hello All!

I'm looking to emblazon a guitar I made with a cool comic cover or maybe even a wicked splash page from a comic posted here.  My tastes are more around the pre-code horror or crime books but I'm looking for anything eye catching, super heroes, westerns, romance included!

Any thoughts?

Thanks!
Jim

I'm partial to Wonder Comics #1 by Better/Standard/Nedor ...

Thanks, Roy!  I like that one a lot, too!  I just wish the resolution was a little tighter.  :(

It definitely in the running!  Thanks!

The cover of "Eerie" #2 is certainly moody and eye-catching, but I don't know if you want something associated with horror.

Great call, jf!  Wally Wood is a personal favorite and the resolution is great!

I keep the choice up in the air for the next few days and see what other suggestions I may get.  They have been great so far.

Thanks for the help!

All right!  Narfstar comes across with the "hey hey!"   >:D

I got to admit, my first instincts go to these, too!  I'll have to make more guitars. ;D

Unfortunately I couldn't find Blue Beetle or Crimes issues suggested posted here at DCM (though I did find the covers at a Seduction of the Innocent site (http://count.netne.net/soti.html)).  Am I missing them somewhere?

More great suggestions!  Thanks!

Jim

Wow, cimmerian!  Thanks for putting 'em in the post!  These are awesome! ;D

I love the Voodoo lettering and the Wood art (of course) of Strange Worlds.  The Spirit splash I just happened to see in an article I read in the last couple weeks (I think an artist used it for inspiration in a pulpish cover for a current novel--escapes me at the moment).

I love the matter-of-fact look on the dame from Crime-Busters.  She looks like she holding a cup of coffee, but she's ventilating that guy!

Decisions, decisions!

Thanks!
Jim

We may not have those issues of BB and CBW but for just the covers, as you found they are available. I recently skimmed through a bunch of crime covers. Just within that genre there were so many cool ones that deciding on just one would be difficult. There are great covers within every genre.

Alternatively you might want to go with the sheer crude energy of these obscure British comic-books from the 1950s, back when Post-war import restrictions meant that readers over here were starved of the 'real' thing!

(http://i51.tinypic.com/291yf53.jpg)(http://i52.tinypic.com/2crlxc4.jpg)(http://i54.tinypic.com/14jyrrd.jpg)...I must admit there's something about the aliens on that Oh Boy! Comics cover (drawn by TV celebrity Bob Monkhouse) that has always rather disturbed me - though I can't quite put my finger on it (not that I'd want to!).

There sure are.  I'm hoping getting opinions from the folks here will help me narrow it down a bit so I know the one I pick would appeal to most others as well.  It's a bit of fun asking as well.

I've also learned I'd love to read that Blue Beetle book, too! ;)

Thanks!

Very neat!  The work (and those aliens in particular) would be at home in a 60s comix book as well.

I haven't seen these before.  Thanks!

Wow!  Phenomenal, Cim!  So many ways to go.  I love Down by the Old Mill Scream and Ghost Rider, but then Boy is smashing!  Between all the babes and the All-Select and painted covers this is getting more difficult to choose instead of easier.   ;D

But given all this help, it will be hard to pick a bad one.

Wow, can't believe I started this back in May.  It was only a couple of weeks ago I got some time to work on it.  I finished it this week and took some pics for the curious (I hope the size isn't a problem):

Now that is a unique looking instrument!
Nicely done R!  I'm betting you'll get some comments when you take it out play.

Thanks Yoc!  It's basically a cigar box with a stick of wood through it and tuned (more or less  :)) like the middle four strings of a normal guitar.  These guys are fun to play, especially for Kieth Richards / blues stuff.
