Title: Problematic Toth Attribution
Post by: kusunoki on January 06, 2011, 08:11:57 PM
I'm trying to put together a collection of Alex Toth-illustrated stories for a project that I'm working on and I've come across a story attributed to him that I have doubts about. According to the GCD, the first story in Standard's Adventures into Darkness 12 has Toth pencils under Peppe inks (although both are given a question mark). Try as I might, though, I can't detect anything of Toth when I read it. Do any of the experts here have an opinion on this?

This story isn't Toth, kusunoki. It's by John Celardo.
I actually produced an index of Alex's work back in 1984, and it has been reproduced many times. My friend Francisco San Millan has been testing it, proofing it, and updating it ever since. The results, which you can trust, are HERE.

Found another discrepancy on GCD. The cover for All-Star Western 115 is listed as being by Gil Kane, but the Toth index has it down as Toth's.

Hey Kusunoki I signed on as your GCD mentor. If that is from Jim's Toth index then I would trust it. You can now click index on All-Star Western 115 and change the credit. Put in the notes that the official Toth index lists it as Toth.

Thanks Narf! I'm going through a lot of the books on the index now (at something of a snail's pace) and I will try to correct any discrepancies that I find.

You can trust the index, guys, but Kusunoki has to be more careful. It's All-AMERICAN Western #115 that has the Toth cover, not All-STAR Western. BIG difference. Pay attention, please.

Like I said I would trust it but I did not check it.

Whoops! Typed "All-Star" here, but fixed "All-American" at the GCD. Thanks Jim. Will be sure to be more careful in the future.

Thanks Narf! I've just put up another one for All-Star Western (this time for sure) 64.
