Post by: hunterguy on September 20, 2010, 01:16:53 PM

CBRs are a collection of jpegs, RAR'ed into a single file.  You extract the jpgs from a cbr using winRAR, or import jpgs to a cbr using same.  Either way, you're downloading jpegs, a cbr just makes it a bit more convenient.

Which books are sitting around as individual pages?  We probably want to weed those out.

There are the odd single page uploads to be used to fill some missing pages in a existing 'cbr' file.
The suggestion being the reader add them once they've downloaded them.  I can only recall a handful of jpg only uploads.

Ok I think I am missing something - today's (9/20) Lawbreakers Suspense Stories #10 when I go to download it - it does not "save" as a CBR file?  I want the book in CBR. any help?

The person who made the scan, hunterguy, chose the .rar format. It still opens nicely in CDisplay. Save it as an .rar and you should be fine. If you don't have your file extensions turned on, check out the Folder Display options in the Control Panel - unless of course you're using a Mac. In which case, I know nothing...

Thank you very much so I downloaded the book in rar then I used the CBR to open it and it can now be read in CBR.  But the icon looks differnet then the other books I downloaded.  The CBR "logo" is set on a white sheet with the corner turned down.   Not sure if I am being clear.

I guess what it boils down to, hunterguy,
is what difference does it make? I understand the desire for consistency and appreciate the calming factor in familiarity, but, hey, in the long run, as long as you can view the scans, why should you care? No sarcasm or anything negative intended in the question, just sometimes it's best to accept what you've got and enjoy rather than push for something that doesn't matter in the end.

As others have mentioned before, you can always use an app to unpackage the .rar file into its component .jpg files and repackage as .cbr. I don't know how to do this, but if you read some other comments about .cbr files you should find the instructions and the apps used.

Enjoy.

Just rename the file and change the extension from "rar" to "cbr," and it should work as expected.

As Jim points out, though, that's more a Windows-convenience issue than anything else.  The reality is that the files are all a series of images in a ZIP or RAR archive, so they're openable by a few different programs depending on your needs.

Of course, that's also "just" what the document files are in recent (2007-) versions of Word and Excel...
