I stumbled across this site:

which gives a history of William H. Wise's Great Publications and its intersection with Ned Pines of the Better/Standard/Nedor group.

The site is a bit old and hard to navigate, but there are articles on other companies here:

I have no idea what the source of info is, but some of you may find it interesting.
