I've just put up paper scans of Captain Marvel Adventures 31 (Fawcett) and The Spirit 18 (Quality) to the site. Thanks, as always, to the scanners.
-
Thanks K, both are now up!
:)

(http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/5776/cma31.jpg)"Capt. Marvel in Buffalo"?
Why would Cap go to Buffalo? It snows 8 months of the year, and ther's no major league Baseball or Basketball team. :)
-
Uploaded Black Diamond Western (Lev Gleason) issues 14, 26, 29, and 31. Not sure who scanned them, but thanks to all involved.

Mr K, thanks especially for the Captain Marvel 31(1944) paper copy to replace the current fische copy. I read most of the CMAs when I was a kid in Buffalo NY, where the action in this particular issue takes place. That cover is very nostalgic for me, like meeting an old friend from the past.
Denny, Buffalo winters aren't as bad as rumored. Usually, snows only 3 months - Dec, Jan, Feb.. sometimes a little in early March.
By the way, nary a buffalo ever roamed in Buffalo (they never grazed east of Illinois). Some trace the name to French settlers, who called it 'the city on the beautiful river' or 'beau fleuve.'

Here is Crime Does Not Pay 47. Thanks to Darkmark for the scan.

Thanks for the uploads Kusunoki. :)
-
Please note that the scan of Black Diamond Western that I uploaded earlier was uploaded originally by maria7727 (and possibly also scanned by her?). Sorry for not having included this information in the original post.
-
Found another one missing from the site. Now uploaded: Superior Stories 1, Nesbit Publishers, 1955. Scans by Ontology.
-
This is a scan by Ontology from a couple of years ago.
-
Whoops! Thanks for spotting that Fett. Looks like one of the administrators caught that on the upload screen, too.
-
Thanks K and fett, yep, I caught it even with my bad eyes.
;)
-
Uploaded Gabby Hayes 58 (Charlton, 1956). Not my scan, but thanks to whoever did it.

Your're welcome. :) Only one I have atm unfortunately. Did you download it from abpc or from the hubs.? ;)

Your're welcome. :) Only one I have atm unfortunately. Did you download it from abpc or from the hubs.? ;)
I got it on DC++. I'm definitely feeling like a newbie, though. What do atm and abpc mean?
-
At the moment (atm) we are approaching the 10 year anniversary of abpc, alt.binaries.pictures.comics, a binary newsgroup on usenet, where organized posting and scanning of comics as we all know and love it started with a great group of guys who are mostly still around. ;)
-
Thanks K, Gabby is now up.

I have access to a mess of Gene Autry issues that are not up on the site. I know Dells can be sketchy, and it says on the uploading thread that "most" Gene Autry issues are not PD, but I thought that I'd just make sure. The numbers in question are 19, 23, 24, 30, 70, 71, 76. I'll throw the covers into this message.
(http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/8780/geneautry19.jpg)(http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/2580/geneautry23.jpg)(http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/5563/geneautry24.jpg)(http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/3478/geneautry30.jpg)(http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/1834/geneautry70.jpg)(http://img594.imageshack.us/img594/7553/geneautry71.jpg)(http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/2981/geneautry76.jpg)

It was found that 30 on were not pd
Should I take that to mean that it is okay to put up 19, 23, and 24?
-
Hi K,
Sure, upload those three issues.
Thanks!
-
Are up in the Dell section. Thanks to the scanner(s).
-
Just noticed that the Gene Autry books haven't made it onto the site yet. Was there a problem with the upload?
-
Looks like only Gene Autry 23 didn't make it K if you wanted to try another upload.
Thanks.
-
Done and done.
-
Thanks K, it's now up!
:)
-
Now up on the site. NMS. The series numbering continues from the Comic Media/ME run. These three issues represent the entire Charlton run, so I guess that makes this a complete series. The numbering continues in Frontier Scout: Daniel Boone.

Added these to the site. The last 3 issues of Masked Raider are titled "Masked Raider presents Billy the Kid Western Outlaw".

Now up!
Many thanks for these uploads kusunoki!

Just picked up off dc++. Thanks to Flatterman for the scan.

Can I be flatterman for a day? I would love to bask in his collection.
-
He certainly seems to have some fantastic stuff. And a wonderful willingness to share.
-
Thanks for doing the #1!
But, a small naming error (not enough zeroes) has put it between #009 and #010
-
Whoops! Could one of the admins please fix it for me?
-
Fixed!
-
Now up in the Dell section. Picked up from DC++. Thanks to the scanner(s).

I'd be happy to search out and put up whatever we need, but which Fawcetts are you referring to and is it possible to pull them up as a list of some kind?

Sure.
Sent you PM

Good show, Kuzunoki! I've been wanting to see one of these Kirby REAL CLUEs for a long time.
-
Thanks K!
The Fawcett books are the same as we had before but with corrected links to make it easier on downloaders.
The last two new to DCM books are very cool!
Thanks again!

Just found on DC++: Police Comics 118. Inching ever closer to finishing off the series.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us (http://imageshack.us)
Edit
Or at least it would be up if the system had accepted it. Can one of the admins help me out? The error message I got went as follows:
Error: No file uploads of this type are allowed. If you believe this to be in error, please quote the above error and report this to the admin
-
K can you upload it to ftp?
Geo
-
Hi K,
What file type did you try to upload?
Zip and CBZ files have never given us a problem. We have had hicups with rar and cbr files from time to time but not via the FTP.
-Yoc
-
It's a cbz and it works perfectly well on my computer. I'll try again today, but if it doesn't work I may need a crash course in how to do it via the ftp (it's been awhile).
(Edit): Well, it's still not working. I wonder if it has something to do with the Catchpha (or however you spell it) box at the bottom. There was no code visible, so I didn't fill anything in.
At any rate, if someone could PM me the ftp info, I'll post it there. Thanks.
-
PM sent K.
-
It's up on the ftp. Thanks for the help, Yoc.
-
Thanks K!
Going up soon.
:)
-
I just noticed that the book is listed on the download site as my scan. I actually found it on DC++ with no indication as to who the scanner might have been. I wouldn't want to steal any credit for work that I haven't done.
-
Corrected it for you K. Sorry about that.
-
No worries. I just wish I actually had the time to help out with the hard work all the scanners are doing.
-
Now up on the Ftp, Crime Files 6 (with what I believe is a mistaken Toth citation). Thanks to Ontology for the scans!
-
Thanks K!
Going up now.
:)
-
Great book! Thanks for passing it along, K.
My guess on two of the artists in the book would be Russ Heath and Alex Toth. GCD guess-credits the 2nd story to Nicky Cardy, and I can see that, but it also makes me think of Heath on some pages. The third story made me think of Toth, though I wasn't previously aware that he did any work for Standard. There's also a guess-credit at GCD for the final story of Andru & Esposito. Could be, could be.
At any rate, a very enjoyable comic.
-
Cover - Nick Cardy
Born to Burn - Rocke Mastroserio
Al Capone - ?
Death/Parther - Cardy
Cops Don't Cry - ?
Homicidal Hitchhikers - Mastroserio
Teen-Age Private Eye - Art Saaf
Legacy of Death - Ross Andru (maybe with Esposito)
No Toth, though he did TONS of stuff for Standard. Watch for a brick of reprints called "Setting the Standard" from Fantagraphics soon. 304 pages! All Toth/All Standard/All from my comics...

-
Looks sensational. I'll have to pre-order it.
-
Good lord Jim, that looks gorgeous! I've been in love with what little I've seen of Toth's Standard work ever since I saw The Hands of Don Jose (Adventures into Darkness 9) reprinted somewhere as a kid. Although I've never seen it confirmed anywhere, it seems to me that Flowers for Deborah's Grave in the same issue might be another Toth piece.
Poztron, DCM has that one and also Battlefront 5 with the fantastic Toth story, Terror of the Tank Men if you want to check out some of the Standard work.
-
That DOES look amazing. Thanks for the pointer Jim!
:)
-
Don't throw things at me but I am not a Toth fan.

"Flowers for Deborah's Grave" is by Mike Sekowsky, kusunoki.
Same Mike Peppe-ish Standard inks, but MS not AT.
That Toth index that I linked you to (no, not YOU, narf, the rest of the group) is not some off-the-wall compendium, but rather the results of 25 years of careful documentation. If it's not there, odds are about 100000 to one against it being Toth.
Peace, Jim (|:{>
-
Jim,
Thanks bunches on the art IDs in the Crime Files comic.
After you point him out I can certainly recognize Cardy.
I'm starting to get a handle on Mastroserio after checking him out in various Charlton comics but it will be while longer before I can readily identify his work.
I agree that it is most likely Mike Esposito inking Andru. I seem to remember reading an interview with Mike where he mentioned him and Andru doing some of their work for Standard in that Toth-ish style as it appealed to art director Mike Peppe.
Sekowsky's work at this time also takes on that Toth-ish look as do some other artists at Standard.

Taste is subjective. It may be like Jesse Marsh or Sam Glanzman. I learned to like their work and appreciate their talent. They will never be favorites. I like much of of Toth's work but he will never be a favorite.
-
Okay, fair enough, narf,
but who DO you like and why?
curious minds want to ridicule know.
Peace, Jim (|:{> ;D
-
My tastes change regularly. I can tend to appreciate a particular story than a particular artist. I find that most have hits and misses just some more of one than the other. I also find that I do not like an overload of a particular artist. I do not buy music because I tend to get sick of a song before too long. Right now I tend to be most impressed by the team of Rock Baker and Jeff Austin on Rowena. It has never disappointed. I do like many of the GA favorites like Baker, Raymond, Fine, Kinstler, Frazetta and others. The Toth and Caniff style just is not my thing.
-
Well I know my tastes in artists has certainly changed over the years.
I remember being very enamored with the art of Burne Hogarth when I was a kid but now his work leaves me rather cold.
It was somewhat the opposite with Toth. I really didn't care for his work when I was young but have come to appreciate his art more and more over the years.
Then there is someone like Neal Adams. I couldn't stand him when I first saw his early work at DC. I must have been about nine years old at the time. By age twelve I had begun to appreciate him a lot more and by my teens I was very much a fan of his art. Nowadays I'm just kinda' lukewarm on him.
I could site other examples but you get the drift.
Best
Joe
-
Reading different people's changing tastes is interesting. With Adams, I was absolutely blown away the first time I saw his stuff as a kid in the early '80s (I think it was reprints of his X-Men issues). Now, though, I really couldn't care either way about his work. It's similar to the way I have felt about John Byrne's stuff over the years, with the difference being that now I really don't like Byrne's work at all.
-
I think glossy paper and coloring have changed the way some artists like Adam's look. I loved both Adam's and Sterenko back in the day.
-
When I first started reading in the early 80s I couldn't stand Kirby, Ditko or Sal B. Today I still hate Sal .
Cole I loved from day one and still admire his stuff.
-
Simon and Kirby good/Simon and Royer bad. I did not like the art on 4th World or when Kirby went back to Marvel his story or art. Kane I liked at DC but his stuff when he went to Marvel was so angular it is some of my very least favorite Marvel covers. Ditko is always hit and miss with me. Not crazy about Wood's work at Marvel. I seem to have a pattern there :-\ I can't think of any Murphy Anderson that I do not like maybe it is a good thing that he never went to Marvel ::)
-
I liked Kirby's work right up until the mid-late 70s when his eyesight troubles really started affecting it.
With Kane I pretty much like all his work although I will say there is a lot of his early work that I have never seen.
For me Ditko's best work is that from the fifties and sixties.
I pretty much like all of Wood's work but will admit that some of the early stuff is a bit crude and the late stuff, when he was sick and using a lot of help from assistant's, is sub par.
Totally agree that Murphy Anderson kept up a consistent high standard. Love his inking on the likes of Kane and Infantino!

Cool! Toth is always welcome in my book.
I had a chance to meet Buster Crabbe when I was a kid and he was living in the Phoenix area. He wasn't making movies anymore but was a spokesman for some swimming pool company.

Thanks K.
Smallish scans but very welcome on the site.
We've only had one issue so far.
-
Before anyone points it out -
YES, I know the two Crabbe books have GIANT cover thumbnails.
I could fix them manually but I'm leaving them as-is for CaptDJ to check and perhaps figure out why it's happened.
They look completely normal to me inside the file and I can't figure it out.

Fresh off DC++, this fills the gap between the two issues already up. Thanks to Jon and Uup for the scans.

Sorry K but I don't see this.
How did you upload it?
It's not on the ftp under his name, I checked Yoc just in case he up'd it there.
Geo
-
I thought I sent it to the ftp. I'll try again.
--Whoops. Had saved it in the wrong folder. I moved it to mine. It should be there now.
-
I see it now K, I'll be moving it over to the site shortly.
Thank you for the up.
Geo
PS: When naming a file please don't use any "Special" letters or punctuation it drives the software program crazy. I had to change the name before I moved it over to the download site, not a big deal, just a heads up on it for next time, OK?
-
Sure thing!
-
Now up on the FTP, Spirit 22. Thanks to Snardermann for the scans!

Sweet!
Now up gang.

Cowboys n Injuns 2 have been put in the small publishers folder, should be in Magazine Enterprises.

thanks NN, fixed.

Now on the Ftp, this early oddity that I found on DC++. Don't know who the scanner was, but all thanks extended.
(http://img831.imageshack.us/img831/6695/starranger1.jpg)PS. This brings the number of issues of this series on the site up to 4. Might it be time to put them together in a dedicated page?
-
Thanks K, now up.
btw, this is incomplete but only missing txt pgs for the most part.
:)
-
Thanks Yoc,
I just noticed that the inside cover is showing up as the icon and also as the first page in the preview.
-
Hi K yeah, I did too.
It's because the first scan is a '.jpeg' and not '.jpg'
Not all the bugs have be sorted out with the cover and preview features.
-
Pappy did the scanning and I put it on DC++.
-
I've updated the Star Ranger listing.
Thanks to Pappy and DM for sharing this rare book and K for uploading it!
:)
-
Big thanks to Darkmark (and Pappy, too)!
-
Now up on the ftp. Thanks to Jon and Uup for the scans!

Thanks K but one important reminder:
Please don't upload any files with an APOSTROPHE in them (or any other special characters) such as the two in your latest.
It buggers up the software when you use them. I've corrected the file name on the ftp now so we are Ok for this one.
It's easy for us to fix that kind of thing when we see it or if it's brought to our attention first.
Thanks again for the upload!
-Yoc
-
Whoops! Sorry for doing that again. I uploaded it without even noticing the file name. I'll be sure to be more careful in the future.
-
No harm done K.

Most things are working relatively well. No hot water, but microwaved towels seem to work almost as well (well, good enough, anyway). Three wells in as many sentences; I must have been here for too long.

Not to be a stickler (especially with books with whose scanning I was uninvolved), but the comics I uploaded yesterday seem to be listed as Prime User's uploads. Did he get them up before I did, or is this a mistake?
-
Hi K,
Yes, that appears to be what happened. You uploaded to the ftp while Prime always uses the Upload File link on the site. Our sincere thanks to both of you for helping to keep DCM up to date as much as possible. I'm glad this type of duplication of efforts doesn't happen very often. :)
-
No worries at all. And thanks to Prime User for all the great work he's doing.
-
Thanks goes out to you both for your help here.
Geo
-
Now up on the ftp. Thanks to the scanner.
PS: Sad to see that Imageshack no longer offers free image hosting. Can anyone recommend a good replacement?
-
I'm not sure what you are seeing K.
I've used ImageShack since late 2006 (5295 images!) as a registered, free user and other than spotty service from time to time I've been happy with them. No free animated Gif sucks but there are others out there.
Perhaps try - http://imgur.com/
I used this site for sharing GIFs and I expect I'd use it again if ImageShack were to die or demand money.
tilliban's scan of Web of Evil 19 was already on the site but thanks for thinking of us.
:)
-Yoc
-
Whoops, my bad for not noticing the scan being already up. I only saw the partial version.
On the ImageShack front, for me, it no longer offers a pastable link free of charge. Instead, it gives a link that can't be used in a forum-type environment (at least at my skill level, anyway).
-
Hmm. Now I am a registered free user so maybe it's different for me than you if you aren't registered.
When I upload it shows me several link options from direct to forums, etc. So for me it looks the same as always.
You might try that other option I posted - it was fine the one time I needed to share an animated GIF file.
