What the heck is a .cbz file (downloaded) - why not make the most commonly used .zip file? In order to open this download I have install some older Java software, which i don't want to do.

I know it's been five years (comment necromancy), but (L)SD, a .cbz file is just a renamed zip file (as a .cbr is just a renamed .rar file). Any of the many comic book readers will open them, or even something like Sumatra PDF, or you can use any normal file manager to open them, or you can just rename them.
